YOUR ROLE
The Senior Legal & Compliance Principal serves as a strategic bridge between the Legal and Human Resources (HR) departments. While this role reports directly to the VP, General Counsel and maintains on-demand responsibilities with the Legal Team as needed, daily responsibilities will be to ensure HR’s organizational adherence to federal and state regulations, while managing HR’s full lifecycle of contracts.
The ideal candidate brings a high level of expertise in human resources law, risk mitigation, internal investigations, and the nuances of the insurance and technology sectors.
Brief Description
YOUR ROLE The Senior Legal & Compliance Principal serves as a strategic bridge between the Legal and Human Resources (HR) departments. While this role reports directly to the VP, General Counsel and maintains on-demand responsibilities with the Legal Team as needed, daily responsibilities will be to ensure HR’s organizational adherence to federal and state regulations, while managing HR’s full lifecycle of contracts.
The ideal candidate brings a high level of expertise in human resources law, risk mitigation, internal investigations, and the nuances of the insurance and technology sectors.
- Contract Management
- Manage the end-to-end HR contract lifecycle, including collaborating with the Legal Team in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating vendor and HR-specific contracts, and service-level agreements.
- Collaborate with HR, as needed, during negotiations for HR-specific contracts.
- Act as the primary legal reviewer for HR-specific contracts, including executive agreements, separation agreements, and staffing agency contracts.
- Collaborate with the Legal Team to ensure timely renewals and compliance with stated contract terms.
- Assist Legal, as needed, with contract matters
- Legal & Regulatory Compliance
- Liaise with external counsel to assist with immigration matters.
- Interpret and apply federal, state, and local employment laws (FMLA, ADA, FLSA) to company policies.
- Monitor industry-specific regulatory shifts to ensure proactive organizational adjustment.
- Collaborate internally to conduct regular compliance audits of HR processes, payroll, and data privacy practices.
- HR Strategy & Employee Relations
- Assist with HR actions (like PIPs or terminations) to mitigate risk of wrongful termination or retaliation claims
- Collaborate with external counsel, as required, or lead complex internal investigations regarding workplace conduct, ethics, or compliance breaches, providing detailed findings and remediation steps.
- Support HR to update the Employee Handbook and internal SOPs to reflect current legal standards.
- Collaborate with HR from a legal risk perspective on matters such as wage garnishment, subpoenas, workers compensation, and unemployment claims.
- Training & Risk Mitigation
- Facilitate and develop, as needed, compliance training programs.
- Serve as the liaison for external counsel during litigation or regulatory audits
- Other duties as assigned.
This is a fully remote role, with the exception of onboarding and optional in-office events.
Skills & Experience- Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in a legal role (Counsel, Senior Paralegal), senior HR role, or a strategic combination of both.
- Contracts Expertise:
Mandatory experience in high-volume contract drafting and negotiation. - Education:
Bachelor’s degree required; JD, Master’s in HR, or Paralegal Certification is highly preferred. - Analytical
Skills:
Ability to translate complex legal jargon into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders. - Industry
Experience:
Previous experience in the Insurance or Technology sectors. - Certification:
Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP), SHRM-SCP, or SPHR. - Tech Literacy:
Experience with Contract Lifecycle Management (CLM) software and HRIS platforms.
- Must be able to sit/stand/walk for prolonged periods of time (up to 8 hours per day), at a desk working on a computer.
- Must be able to use standard office equipment for extended periods of time, including but not limited to, a mouse, keyboard, phone and video conferencing.
