Position summary:
The literacy support teacher works with students in grades k-5 (elementary), 6-8 (middle school), 9-12 (high school) who exhibit the need for additional support in order to become skilled readers. This service supplements and reinforces classroom literacy instruction. Student strengths and needs are identified through varied assessments and targeted instruction is designed, planned and implemented to assist each learner in creating attainable measurable goals and provide the resources to reach these goals.
Instruction is flexible and students can be seen one-on-one, in small groups or through an inclusion model. The amount of instructional time per week may vary depending on students' needs. The goal of literacy support intervention is for all students to become independent and successful readers in the classroom and throughout their lives.
Job qualifications:
? Valid ohio teaching certificate/license (elementary certification (k-5), middle certification (6-8), high school certification (9-12) or special ed. Certification/license).
? Prefer master's degree in reading and/or extensive training and experience in early literacy instruction.
Essential duties:
? Provides targeted and direct instruction to students identified as eligible for literacy services in individual, small group, and/or full classroom settings.
? Uses identified needs to guide the learning process toward student achievement of district's reading/language arts content standards. Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects using formal and informal assessment data obtained from students.
? Uses a variety of instructional techniques and literacy materials consistent with reading/language arts content standards and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
? Creates a classroom environment and research-based program of study that are conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
? Provides written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
? Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
? Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, administrative guidelines, or specific program requirements.
? Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
? Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
? Conducts or participates in needed parent conferences and telephone conferences.
? Conducts student assessments to identify those eligible for intervention services, to plan instruction, and/or to assist staff members in learning various assessment techniques. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
? Collaborates, as needed, with appropriate district personnel regarding students who may need specialized interventions.
? Provides consultant/collaborative services to classroom teachers, model "best" instructional practices, and team teaches as appropriate to support individuals or groups of students in learning or transferring effective strategies.
? Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through professional development activities.
? Coordinates with the principal in planning and implementing professional development activities to address school improvement.
? Helps locate, order, and promote materials to improve reading instruction.
? Participates in discussions or activities focused on using research to improve reading/language arts teaching.
? Attends meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
? Ensures the safety of students.
? Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relationships.
? Remains free of any alcohol or nonprescription controlled substance and abuse of any prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout employment in the district.
? Exhibits professional behavior, emotional stability, and sound judgment.
? Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, and intelligent human beings.
? Understands the legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in, and practice of, ethical principles and democratic values.
? Maintains confidentiality and respect for confidential information at all times.
