The Position
The City of Dublin is seeking an Assistant Engineer (Civil) or an Associate Civil Engineer to perform a variety of routine to moderately complex civil and/or traffic engineering assignments in support of public works/transportation programs. This recruitment is being conducted to fill one full-time vacancy in the Public Works Department. The department may choose to fill this vacancy at the Assistant level or Associate level, depending on the qualifications of the candidate pool.
Engineer
Under general direction of the Senior Civil Engineer, performs varied professional civil/traffic engineering work in design, construction, and inspection; coordinates a variety of public works and transportation projects; checks subdivision and related plans; and performs related work as required.
This is the entry level in the professional engineering class series. Positions in this class perform basic professional engineering work and may coordinate the work of technical staff. Appointment to this level requires moderate administrative, analytical and technical skills acquired by some professional training and experience such that completion of the certification with the State of California as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) would afford.
AssociateCivil Engineer
Under general administrative direction, supervises and performs varied and complex professional civil and traffic engineering work in connection with the design, construction, maintenance and plan reviews of street improvements; may oversee contract compliance activities as they relate to construction contract procedures; and prepare plans, specification, progress reports and other engineering materials; and performs related work as required.
This is the journey level in the professional engineering class series. Positions in this class perform complex professional engineering work and coordinate the work of lower level professional and technical staff. Appointment to this level requires considerable administrative, analytical and technical skills acquired by professional training and experience. Incumbents of this classification are expected to have considerable knowledge in traffic and transportation, right-of-way acquisition, California Map Act, current development and capital improvement projects.
SalaryAssistant Engineer: $54.91 - $68.63 Hourly | $9,517.84 - $11,897.04 Monthly | $ - $ Annually
Associate Civil Engineer: $63.86 - $79.83 Hourly | $11,070 - $13,838.07 Monthly | $ - $ Annually

Assistant Engineer – Responsibilities- Prepares all phases of engineering design & drafting, plans & specifications for the construction of streets, street lighting, traffic signals, signing, striping, pavement marking, parks, recreation & parking facilities, storm drains, and other related public works projects;
- Conducts various traffic, transportation and related engineering studies;
- Prepares recommendations, reports, agenda statements and related correspondence;
- Performs independent plan check, review & processing of maps, plans & specifications for conformance to State and City standards;
- Participates in public works inspection and surveying activities including physical field inspections under adverse conditions (heat, cold, noise, hazardous materials);
- Performs a variety of engineering calculations for storm drain facilities, structural stresses, strains & strengths, survey closures, areas, grading & curves and related factors;
- Gathers supporting data; analyzes alternatives; and prepares estimates of time and construction costs; administers design, construction and engineering contracts;
- Monitors capital improvement budgets for assigned projects & programs, including the City's urban run-off program (NPDES);
- Provides information and assistance to Staff, contractors, developers, the public and to others over the telephone and at the public counter; prepare clear and concise written and oral reports to various groups;
- Attends off-site meetings, conferences and seminars during work and non-work hours, and make presentations at these meetings.
- Plans, organizes, and directs engineering work in connection with public works construction, traffic studies, maintenance and improvement projects;
- Prepares and supervises the design of engineering plans and specifications for the construction of streets, street lighting, traffic signals, drainage structures, parking facilities and other public works projects;
