Job Overview

Principal Civil/Structural Designer directly impacts the effectiveness of their team and related teams. They exchange ideas and information regarding Civil/Structural Design effectively, work autonomously within established procedures, lead coordination of others, and propose improvements to processes and methods within the discipline.

Job Description

As the lead designer, the Principal Civil/Structural Designer delivers high‑quality, construction‑ready drawings and models, ensures compliance with project specifications, and drives coordination across disciplines.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and develop arrangement and detail conceptual, FEED, studies, and detail design drawings of high technical quality.
  • Develop 3‑D models and ensure clash‑free integration with all disciplines.
  • Ensure design deliverables are completed and issued per project specifications, MDR, and Level 2 & 3 procedures within agreed schedules and budgets.
  • Apply knowledge and/or skills to a range of activities.
  • Set priorities, organise own work and time to meet objectives, and forecast and plan resource requirements as Lead Designer.
  • Act as a coordinator and technical expert in the development/modification of 3‑D macros in E3D/S3D.
  • Become fully familiar with project scope, specifications, schedule, and inter‑discipline requirements, identifying concerns early and taking appropriate initiatives.
  • Prepare civil and structural layouts in close liaison with engineers and counterparts from other disciplines.
  • Assist Lead Engineer/Designer in raising technical queries, preparing estimates and job scope changes.
  • Attend key project meetings (Kick‑off, review, vendor).
  • Monitor and coordinate the design team remotely if required, and lead a project in a Multi‑Office Project Execution Environment (MOPEX).
  • Ensure work follows McDermott requirements, client and statutory design codes, standards, or procedures, with a focus on health and safety policies.
  • Organise design work, including setting up 3‑D and 2‑D systems.
  • Supervise Designers and Associate Designers.
  • Execute relevant administration and filing.
  • Check designs, emphasizing interfaces with other disciplines, operational requirements, constructability, maintainability, and HSE aspects.
  • Provide drafting support as required.
  • Review other discipline and supplier drawings.
  • Engineer miscellaneous steel.
  • Participate in proposals as an expert for CSA design work.
  • When acting as Lead Designer, in addition:
    • Direct and coordinate medium or large design teams.
    • Lead projects, engaging participation of other disciplines.
    • Coordinate all activities within own discipline and interfaces with other disciplines.
    • Lead design teams to complete work within planned schedule and budget, meeting standards and MDR.
    • Plan, organise, and direct all aspects of discipline execution, including scope, deliverables, schedule, and workforce resources, agreeing allocations with the Engineering Manager.
    • Maintain responsibility for progress and productivity, identifying corrective actions.
    • Act as project‑based discipline point of contact in communications and meetings with the project team, customer, vendors, subcontractors, and relevant authorities.

Project:
Lead Designer, Lead Engineer, Project Engineering Manager

Functional:
Supervising Department Manager

Liaise With:
Lead Designers, Engineers, all other engineering and design disciplines assigned to the project, Project Engineer, Material Control Team, Document Control, and Customer representatives

Supervises:
Design team assigned to a project or part of the project during the detailing and production phases

Qualifications
  • High‑school graduate with a diploma in Civil or Structural disciplines or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years with a major contractor or consultant, with 5+ years of experience in oil and gas.
  • Detailed knowledge of industry detailing standards & codes and 3‑D/2‑D drafting and material control systems (AutoCAD and/or Micro Station).
  • Minimum 2 projects working and/or review experience in E3D and/or S3D.
  • Capable of leading projects.
  • Engineer miscellaneous steel and participate in proposals as an expert for CSA design work.
