Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, develop, and inspire the Mathematics department to deliver high‑quality, inquiry‑based learning that promotes curiosity, critical thinking, and a genuine love of mathematics.
  • Oversee the planning and delivery of a coherent, vertically and horizontally aligned Maths curriculum in line with IB philosophy and assessment frameworks.
  • Create and sustain a positive, inclusive departmental culture that supports high expectations, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Support and coach teachers within the department through mentoring, lesson observations, and professional dialogue to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
  • Ensure effective differentiation and inclusive practice across the department to meet the needs of all learners, including EAL, gifted students, and those requiring additional support.
  • Lead the effective use of assessment data to monitor progress, inform intervention strategies, and drive improved student outcomes.
  • Promote the purposeful integration of technology and innovative pedagogical approaches to enhance engagement and deepen mathematical understanding.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders and cross‑curricular teams to support whole‑school initiatives, curriculum development, and strategic priorities.
  • Engage proactively with parents and the wider school community regarding curriculum, progress, and departmental initiatives.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school through co‑curricular activities, events, and academic enrichment opportunities.
  • Model and uphold GEMS values and the IB Learner Profile, fostering professional growth, reflective practice, and a culture of lifelong learning.
Skills

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A certified professional teaching qualification at degree level, such as

    B.Ed, PGCE, PGDE or equivalent in Mathematics specialism.
  • A minimum of 3–5 years’ successful experience teaching Secondary Mathematics, with evidence of strong student outcomes and effective classroom practice.
  • Demonstrable experience in, or readiness to step into, curriculum and departmental leadership, including supporting colleagues, contributing to curriculum planning, and driving improvement.
  • Experience teaching within an IB framework (MYP and/or DP) is preferred, though strong candidates from other international or national curricula will be considered.
  • A proven passion for high‑quality, inquiry‑based Mathematics teaching, with the ability to inspire both students and colleagues.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead collaboratively and build positive relationships across the school community.
  • The vision, energy, and commitment to contribute to the continued success of a leading flagship GEMS school, supporting high standards and a diverse international student body.
