Position: Surgical Technologist II - On Call Evenings - Downey Med Ctr- OR

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or physician and in accordance with the legal scope of competency and within established standards of care, policies and procedures, assists the physician during surgical procedures by performing scrub duties.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates proficiency by exhibiting required skills, competencies, and behaviors.
  • Upholds policies, procedures, principles of responsibility, and applicable laws.
  • Maintains a professional, supportive attitude and identifies new ideas.
  • Utilizes effective communication strategies, including chain of command and issue escalation, to achieve intended outcomes.
  • Participates in problem identification and resolution in collaboration with the Registered Nurse.
  • Prioritizes work assignments to ensure completion of patient care activities and notifies the Registered Nurse if unable to complete assignments.
  • Complies with regulatory requirements, policies, procedures, and standards of practice.
  • Correctly identifies patient and scheduled procedure.
  • Performs patient care activities within scope of competency, considering age‑related needs, and reports unusual findings to the Registered Nurse.
  • Collects data and provides information in a timely manner to the Registered Nurse to assist in plan of care revision.
  • Discusses discharge barriers with the Registered Nurse and takes directed intervention.
  • Applies standard precautions; maintains a safe environment for self and others.
  • Observes patient/family conditions and reports sudden changes or unusual findings to the Registered Nurse.
  • Demonstrates competencies during the probationary period and ongoing by completing departmental competency validation.
  • Transports patients, equipment, supplies, and specimens throughout the medical center using proper body mechanics.
  • Participates in departmental performance improvement activities (planning, measuring, monitoring, assessing, and improving).
  • Assembles and ensures all equipment/supplies/instruments are appropriate, available, calibrated, and adjusted, in working order, sterilized per protocol, and organized for upcoming procedure.
  • Sets up and organizes the operating room.
  • Performs scrub role (anticipates surgeon’s needs, passes instruments, cuts sutures, holds retractors, obtains/processes tissue samples) according to standard.
  • Assists physician and others within scope of competency.
  • Assists with transfer, transport, and stabilization of patients within scope of competency.
  • Cleans instruments, containers, and equipment according to established guidelines and reassembles packs, prepares for sterilization, and/or returns to Central Processing.
  • Operates sterilization equipment, reports defective equipment upon discovery, and performs preventive maintenance.
  • Utilizes computer systems effectively and efficiently.
  • Practices customer service standards as defined by the Service Area, Medical Center, and specific department.
  • Anticipates customer desires, listens, takes proactive steps to meet needs, resolves issues within scope.
  • Assists dissatisfied members by listening, taking responsibility, and ensuring problem resolution.
  • Promptly answers call lights, alarms, and patient requests.
  • Under direction of the Registered Nurse, provides patients and significant others with needed information within scope of competency.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Ensures a clean, orderly, and functional work environment.
  • Considers team member viewpoints; remains flexible, cooperative, and willing to assist others.
  • Confronts conflict situations constructively and seeks appropriate assistance.
  • Accepts accountability for own actions and constructive criticism.
  • Assists others unfamiliar to the department.
  • Attends mandatory meetings and in‑services; participates in departmental professional development.
  • Assesses unit learning needs, develops annual educational plans, and recommends changes.
  • Adheres to attendance policy, reports promptly for shift, minimizes personal phone use, and supports collaborative labor‑management partnership.
  • Organizes work to minimize overtime, identifies and assists in system improvements, and utilizes payroll and non‑payroll resources to maximum potential.
