Job Description

Position Title: Senior Backup Storage Engineer

Duration: 12+ months contract with possible conversion and extension

Location: Downey, CA, 90242 (Hybrid)

A Senior Backup Storage Engineer is responsible for leading and/or working on the most complex IT infrastructure, including modification, installation, testing, implementation, and support of new or existing system hardware and software products. The role involves planning, installing, configuring, and managing core system hardware and software to support an organization’s IT architecture and business needs. The engineer may hold titles such as Backup/Recovery Engineer, Storage Engineer, or Backup Administrator.

The Senior Engineer will administer, install, configure, and maintain backup and storage systems including Comm Vault, Dell/EMC, IBM, Net App, and Pure Storage. Responsibilities include creating Comm Vault backup jobs for Linux, UNIX, Windows hosts, NAS NDMP, and databases (DB2, SQL, Oracle, Postgre

SQL); masking, zoning, and provisioning storage to UNIX/Windows/VMware servers; performing data recoveries; general troubleshooting; supporting cloud backup recovery for AWS, Azure, GCP, and IBM Cloud; regular system health checks and upgrades; analysis of issues and recommendation of solutions; system architecture design; customer collaboration on application testing after changes; timely hardware upgrades with minimal downtime; evaluation of new technologies; and ensuring security products are patched regularly.

The Engineer must have in-depth knowledge of Comm Vault Complete Data Protection, VMware data protection and recovery using VADP, and be proficient in configuring storage arrays with business continuity solutions. Experience in upgrades, storage migration, and data center consolidation projects is essential. They should administer Pure Storage solutions, manage IBM storage systems, troubleshoot Dell storage systems, and work with Net App solutions such as ONTAP, Snap Mirror, and Snap Vault.

Scripting skills in Power Shell and Python for automating storage tasks are required. Proficiency with UNIX systems (IBM AIX, Linux, HP-UX), TCP/IP, networking hardware, and designing scalable cloud solutions across AWS, Azure, GCP, and IBM Cloud is also necessary. Strong oral and written communication, effective time management, attention to detail, and the ability to translate technical information for non-technical audiences are required.

Within the last five years, the candidate must have a minimum of three years of experience as a backup administrator to a data backup system such as Comm Vault, including configuration, implementation, and troubleshooting in enterprise environments. A minimum of three years working with storage solutions from Dell/EMC, IBM, Net App, and Pure Storage, covering both midrange and enterprise-class storage arrays, is required.

Additionally, at least two years of experience using, configuring, implementing, and troubleshooting cloud-based backup, servers, and storage systems in enterprise settings is required.

A bachelor’s degree in an IT-related or Engineering field is required; additional qualifying experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
