DOT – Motor Vehicles. The mission of the Division of Motor Vehicles is to provide excellence in transportation by delivering courteous and efficient service to the public while protecting Delaware residents. We establish the validity of licensed drivers and ensure safe, non‑polluting vehicles are operated on Delaware roadways. We also provide a safe, efficient, and environmentally sensitive Toll network that offers convenient, cost‑effective options for processing all vehicular traffic.

Summary Statement

This position supervises the dealer section associates. The role ensures timely processing and compliance with state laws and procedures. The selected applicant will attend a five‑week training program in Dover, Delaware prior to reporting to their work location. The position performs the full range of essential functions in at least one motor vehicle functional area of Driver or Vehicle Services and reports to a Motor Vehicle Associate Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are core duties common to all positions in the class. Incumbents may perform related duties not listed.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Processing transactions such as issuing, renewing, suspending, and revoking driver, identity, and motor vehicle credentials; accessing driving records; inspecting vehicles; assessing fines and penalties; and reviewing customer history.
  • Delivering excellent customer service by obtaining and using sensitive information to resolve issues.
  • Identifying situations outside standard procedures and recommending exceptions in accordance with laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Handling all DMV monies accurately, reconciling, and depositing fees and penalties.
  • Interpreting and explaining federal, state, and division laws to customers, attorneys, lien and insurance companies, law enforcement, dealers, agencies, and other jurisdictions.
  • Reviewing and analyzing source documents (birth certificates, passports, court documents, bills of sale, wills, powers of attorney) for validity, completeness, and authenticity.
  • Using manual, computerized, and specialized systems to determine eligibility, complete transactions, and meet service level standards.
  • Researching, evaluating, and making judgmental decisions to resolve discrepancies and exceptions.
  • Answering customer questions and completing non‑DMV services such as voter and organ/donor registration, warrant resolutions, red light violations, and E‑Zpass transponder services.
  • Administering vision, written, oral, and/or road examinations for driver evaluation.
  • Inspecting vehicle equipment and performing off‑site inspections for vehicle identification.
  • Operating manual and computerized vehicle testing equipment.
  • Preparing records and reports.
Job Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate competence in each area below:

  • Three years’ experience in document processing, including reviewing and evaluating records for completeness and conformity with laws, rules, and procedures.
  • Three years’ experience in customer service, providing prompt, accurate, courteous service and handling complaints.
  • Two years’ experience interpreting motor vehicle laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Three years’ experience using automated information systems to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve, and report data.
  • Two years’ experience operating equipment used in driver or vehicle services (e.g., scanners, authenticators, credential printers, brake machines, emissions testing equipment).
  • Six months’ experience in staff supervision, including planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating work of others.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked, or canceled).
