Introduction
Delaware's Attorney General, the State's chief law enforcement officer, has a broad responsibility to combat crime, uphold civil rights, safeguard families, fight fraud, and protect consumers in the First State. Each of the more than 500 staff who work in the Office of the Attorney General are dedicated to serving all Delawareans with integrity and passion. Deputy Attorneys General, with critical support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public's access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.
Statement
The Criminal Division is seeking an experienced Deputy Attorney General to serve as the Unit Head of the Special Victims Unit in Kent County. Prosecutors in this unit work closely with medical professionals, law enforcement, and child welfare experts to investigate and prosecute cases involving sexual assault, child abuse, child fatalities, and neglect. The Unit Head oversees the evaluation of evidence for potential charges and ensures the effective prosecution of cases supported by the facts, with a strong focus on justice for the most vulnerable victims.
This position is based in historic Dover, Delaware, a central location offering convenient access to Delaware’s scenic beaches and a manageable commute from New Castle County. This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned prosecutor to lead a highly specialized, fast‑paced unit dedicated to victim‑centered prosecution and accountability. As Unit Head, the selected attorney will provide strategic and operational leadership to a dedicated team handling cases involving sexual offenses, child abuse, domestic violence, and other crimes against vulnerable individuals.
The role requires a deep understanding of trauma‑informed prosecution, advanced trial advocacy skills, and a commitment to mentoring and developing prosecutors within the unit. The Unit Head will collaborate closely with Division leadership and will have access to national, regional, and local professional development opportunities. Functions
As Unit Head, this individual will maintain a limited caseload of complex matters, including child death and homicide, child abuse and neglect, and sexual assault cases, while serving as the primary leader and manager of the Special Victims Unit. Responsibilities include directing and supervising Deputy Attorneys General, overseeing administrative and support staff operations, coordinating case assignments and training, and managing overall unit performance.
The Unit Head works closely with law enforcement agencies, child protection partners, medical professionals, and the courts to address case‑related issues and ensure effective collaboration. The position also includes “on‑call” responsibilities to assist law enforcement with after‑hours investigations and critical incidents.
Interested applicants should possess substantial felony trial experience, experience working with victims, and the ability to evaluate criminal cases, determine appropriate resolutions, and anticipate legal issues. This position requires strong prosecution skills, demonstrated leadership ability, and well‑developed interpersonal skills. Candidates must have the capacity to effectively manage staff, lead and participate in training for Deputy Attorneys General, and demonstrate a high level of proficiency in criminal prosecution.
