Base Pay Range

$18.73/hr - $28.09/hr

General Summary

The Chaplain Resident is a full‑time learner enrolled in Bayhealth’s accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program. Residents serve as part of the interdisciplinary clinical team while receiving supervised theological education and pastoral formation. Residents provide emotional, spiritual, and religious support to patients, families, and staff under the guidance of ACPE‑certified educators and senior staff chaplains.

The position is both educational and clinical, designed to foster growth in professional identity, theological reflection, and competency in the delivery of interfaith spiritual care within a healthcare environment.

Responsibilities
  • Spiritual Care & Clinical Practice
    • Provide spiritual care to patients, families, and staff as assigned, reflecting diverse beliefs and traditions.
    • Respond to spiritual care referrals and participate in daily unit rounding under supervision.
    • Offer prayer, ritual, and support during trauma, loss, ethical decision‑making, and transitions in care.
    • Chart spiritual assessments and interventions in the electronic medical record (EMR), using FICA, HOPE, SOAP, and similar tools.
    • Participate in Bayhealth’s on‑call pastoral coverage rotation, with appropriate supervision and support.
  • Pastoral Education & Formation
    • Participate fully in all CPE program components, including individual supervision, group process, didactic seminars, verbatim presentations, case studies, and reflective practice.
    • Complete all program requirements, including written assignments, peer evaluations, learning goals, and clinical hours.
    • Incorporate feedback from peers, educators, and mentors into ongoing development.
    • Demonstrate accountability to one’s learning covenant and progress toward ACPE’s Outcomes and Competencies.
  • Collaboration & Institutional Engagement
    • Serve as a member of interdisciplinary healthcare teams, attending rounds, family meetings, and huddles as appropriate.
    • Support staff during critical incidents, code events, and bereavement situations.
    • Respect and uphold patient rights, confidentiality, and hospital values in all interactions.
    • Attend departmental meetings and debriefings as scheduled.
  • All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience
  • Education: Bachelor Degree
  • Related field
  • Credential(s): None Required
  • Experience: Minimum of one unit of ACPE‑accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) completed prior to residency hire. Endorsement or good standing with one’s faith tradition or spiritual community. Demonstrated interest in professional chaplaincy or spiritual care within a healthcare context. Must meet all application requirements as outlined in Bayhealth’s CPE residency recruitment materials.
