Overview
Vehicle Technician role at Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service based in Charminster, Dorset. The position is full-time and permanent.
Responsibilities- Carry out inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of a wide range of vehicles and associated operational equipment, such as fire appliances and specialist rescue equipment, ensuring work is completed to the required standards.
- Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory and best practice standards within the Workshop.
- Participate in specialist training (e.g., Scania FBT levels 1–3, Rosenbauer maintainers course and Godiva pump repair training). Some courses may require overnight stays if outside the Service area.
- Support Dorset Fire Stations and the West Moors Training Centre; provide occasional support in the Wiltshire area as needed.
- Full current driving licence; willing to meet travel requirements of the role. Use of your own vehicle may be required.
- Service vehicle available for daily maintenance and out-of-hours breakdowns (manual transmission only).
- A Category C licence is required for the role; if not currently held, applicants will be considered for a course to obtain it.
- Willingness to participate in the emergency out-of-hours scheme (evenings and weekends, one week in every five-week rota) with appropriate remuneration.
- Must meet all essential requirements listed in the Person Specification and be eligible for Standard Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) clearance prior to employment.
- All offers are subject to pre-employment checks (identity, right to work, medical, references, and verification of employment history and gaps in the last 3 years).
- Upon appointment, you may be required to adhere to a Health Surveillance Programme and attend an Occupational Health appointment for baseline readings.
- Pay:
Starting salary up to £41,699 (includes an average non-guaranteed overtime of £3,500 per annum). - Basic salary: £34,434 per annum, rising by annual increments to £37,280.
- Annual tool allowance: £469.44;
Annual out-of-hours scheme: £3,296.21. - Annual leave: 27 days per annum + 8 bank holidays, pro-rata; rises to 30 days after five years’ service.
- Hours:
37 hours per week, Monday to Friday; plus 1 week per 5-week rota on call. - Flexi time scheme, Local Government Pension Scheme, family-friendly schemes and health & wellbeing services.
