Position

School Caretaker at Potens at Dorset Council

Locations

Lower School – Weymouth

Upper School – Dorchester

Overview

We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity here at Potens for a School Caretaker. This role will involve working across the two sites, our Lower School in Weymouth and our Upper School in Dorchester.

Closing date: 18/02/2026 (may close sooner if suitable applicants are found). Sponsorship is not available for this role.

  • The position is term‑time only, with occasional hours during school holidays.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Supporting and coordinating all odd‑job tasks and routine maintenance activities, ensuring planned work, reactive breakdowns, and cyclical programs are delivered.
  • Coordinating with external contractors and liaising with our central estates department.
  • Overseeing premises to ensure compliance with Health and Safety standards and performing basic upkeep of the external grounds.
  • Maintaining accurate Health and Safety compliance records (e.g., water temperature checks, emergency lights, fire alarms).
  • Providing key‑holding responsibilities and responding to out‑of‑hours callouts from the school.
  • Maintaining surrounding grounds and vegetation.
  • Supporting our other site in Weymouth may be required.
  • Opening and doing a Health & Safety check in the morning, carrying out repairs, and locking up in the evening. The shift start/finish times are negotiable and will be discussed at the interview.
Who You Are
  • You have experience with odd‑job tasks and are willing to undertake them.
  • Relevant trade qualifications are desirable but not essential.
  • You can communicate sensitively with all staff and students with Special Educational Needs.
  • You are flexible to work as needed and a good team player.
  • You are proficient in basic Microsoft Office, emailing, and web browsing.
  • You possess good written and verbal communication skills.
  • You can maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, in line with all policies.
