We are seeking a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics to support the Department and the Trust in the provision of Elective and Emergency Orthopaedic Surgery with an emphasis on Wrist & Hand Surgery. The appointee will join a team of five Upper Limb Consultants (two Wrist & Hand and three Shoulder Surgeons) and will work within a larger T&O team that includes nineteen consultants offering a range of sub‑specialty services including lower limb arthroplasty, soft‑tissue surgery, foot & ankle surgery, spine surgery, hip preservation surgery and paediatric orthopaedics.

There is a trauma on‑call commitment associated with the post: a third on‑call 1:16 weekday and weekend basis. The post holder will also contribute to departmental education and training programmes and the clinical governance process. An on‑call availability supplement of Category A – low frequency (1:9 or less frequent, 3.0 % of full‑time basic salary) will be provided.

Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees in the UK. All other categories of doctors must be on the GMC Specialist Register and hold a License to Practise.

Main duties of the job
  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in the delivery of general trauma and specialist wrist & hand surgery trauma & elective orthopaedic out‑patient, operative and in‑patient care.
  • Provide outpatient services in wrist & hand surgery once appointed.
  • Share trauma & orthopaedic advice with medical and surgical inpatients.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, both medical and nursing, to improve and advance the service.
  • Assist in the management of the department.
  • Teach and train trainees, junior staff, nursing staff, primary‑care colleagues and medical students.
  • Ensure active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

Person Specification Qualifications
  • FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent
  • Specialist register for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery or within 6 months of admission for trainees in the UK; alternative doctors must meet GMC specialist register requirements.
  • License to Practise
  • ATLS provider with current certificate
  • ATLS trainer
  • Postgraduate Diploma in hand surgery (registered or completed)
Experience and achievements
  • Sub‑specialty fellowship level training in wrist & hand surgery
  • High level of clinical experience and competence in wrist & hand surgery and general trauma & orthopaedics
  • Expert clinical opinions on a range of problems within the specialty
  • Broad experience in trauma & orthopaedics
  • Awareness of current issues and future direction of the specialty
  • Understanding of wider NHS issues
  • Leadership and teamwork across professions
  • Attendance at a recognised management course
Teaching and training
  • Experience and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and other healthcare professionals
  • Academic achievements or publications demonstrating familiarity with research methods
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision
  • Attendance at teaching courses
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education
Audit and research
  • Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation and implementation of audit projects
