Mechanical Engineering (Target Operations) Apprentice
Join UKRI India as a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), working on the ISIS Target Operations team at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
Job Overview- Salary: £19,514 per annum (rising annually throughout the apprenticeship)
- Contract: Fixed‑Term, 48 months
- Hours: Full‑time, 37 hours per week
- Location: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell Campus, Didcot, OX11 0QX

As an apprentice you will receive formal training and hands‑on experience, building technical and professional skills while contributing to cutting‑edge research and innovation. You will work under the mentorship of the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source team, gaining experience with heavy lifting, remote handling, and the manufacture of specialist target components.
What You’ll Be Doing – Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities- Complete a prescribed programme of training at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
- Work safely and in line with established laboratory safety measures.
- Prepare assemblies using novel techniques and exotic materials such as tantalum and tungsten.
- Monitor running systems including water cooling, ventilation, gas handling and vacuum systems.
- Engage in engineering projects involving accurate machining, precision fitting and the use of high‑tech equipment.
- Learn and support cryogenic systems, remote handling, lifting operations and complex assemblies.
- Follow procedures and risk assessments under supervision.
- Communicate with staff across STFC and with the training provider, representing STFC in external contacts.
- Attend additional training to support the role and service delivery.
Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician – Single Discipline (accepted by Skills England).
Entry Requirements- 5 GCSEs including Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above).
- Awareness of basic health and safety.
- Enthusiastic and motivated to learn, both in the workplace and through formal training.
- Good problem‑solving skills.
- Interest in engineering and basic knowledge of mechanical systems.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- IT literacy and experience with Microsoft Office applications.
- Salary increases annually during the apprenticeship.
