Job Description & How to Apply Below
You have just finished your degree and want to apply what you’ve learned in a real, hands-on engineering environment. You step into a laboratory where lasers are used not for theory, but to solve real customer problems at microscopic scale.
In this role, you will be part of a team of around 16 engineers and scientists, working with state-of-the-art laser micromachining systems to produce components and manufacture precision plates. Your work will involve machining to extremely tight tolerances, often within plus or minus one micron. You will program the machines, optimise processes, and refine techniques to achieve consistent, high-quality results.
Your day-to-day will be hands-on, with plenty of variety and responsibility. Some projects will focus on process optimisation, others on delivering production components to exacting standards. Occasionally, you may be asked to work a few hours on a weekend, around one in four weekends, with overtime paid at time and a half and travel expenses covered.
You will be supported by experienced engineers and scientists who will help you build confidence in laser processing, materials behaviour, and precision engineering. The role is practical and applications-driven, ideal for graduates who enjoy using their skills in a tangible way. It is not a research or PhD position- this is about making things happen on the lab floor.
As you develop in the role, you may gain exposure beyond the lab, supporting technical discussions, assisting with installations, or contributing to customer support. This is an environment where curiosity, teamwork, and ownership are valued, and where your practical skills will make a real impact.
Essential requirements
Degree or MSc in Physics, Engineering, Optical or Laser Engineering, or a related discipline with practical, hands-on lab experience
Interest in laser technology, micromachining, or precision manufacturing
Ability to work hands-on with complex technical systems and tight tolerances
Good IT, problem-solving, and process optimisation skills
Comfortable taking responsibility and working to deadlines
Willingness to occasionally work a few hours on weekends with overtime and travel covered
