Pay Range: $68,000.00 - $73,000.00

Position Summary

The Hostler Supervisor oversees day-to-day yard operations and leads a team of yard hostlers/yard jockeys responsible for safely moving trailers, containers, and equipment within the facility. This role ensures efficient trailer spotting, dock flow, equipment readiness, and yard organization to support inbound, outbound, and warehouse operations. The Supervisor promotes safety, productivity, and communication across warehouse, transportation, and carrier partners.

Leadership & Team Management

* Supervise, train, and coach a team of hostlers/yard drivers on daily tasks, safety procedures, and performance expectations.

* Assign yard moves according to operational priorities, dock schedules, and shipping/receiving needs.

* Monitor performance, conduct evaluations, and participate in corrective actions when needed.

* Create and maintain daily staffing schedules and coordinate coverage during absences or volume spikes.

* Oversee safe and timely movement of trailers to docks, yard positions, and staging areas.

* Ensure all trailers are properly chocked, locked, and secured per safety standards.

* Maintain accurate yard maps, trailer inventories, and equipment status.

* Monitor yard flow to minimize congestion and maximize dock utilization.

* Partner with warehouse and transportation teams to ensure accurate trailer sequencing for inbound/outbound operations.

Communication & Coordination

* Serve as the point of contact for carriers, drivers, warehouse leads, and transportation planners regarding trailer needs.

* Provide real-time updates on yard capacity, trailer shortages, or operational delays.

* Collaborate with maintenance teams to schedule repairs and ensure equipment readiness.

Administrative & Reporting

* Maintain yard management system (YMS) accuracy; update trailer movements and equipment statuses.

* Track productivity, safety metrics, and equipment usage to support KPI reporting.

* Manage timekeeping, attendance, and schedule adjustments for the hostler team.

* Assist with audits, compliance reviews, and documentation as needed.

Qualifications

* 4+ years of experience in yard operations, hostler, or transportation logistics.

* 3 years of leadership or team lead experience preferred.

* Strong knowledge of yard safety practices, trailer types, and dock operations.

* Ability to operate yard tractors/hostler trucks.

* Proficient in yard management systems (YMS) or warehouse management systems (WMS).

* Experience working in a union environment required or strongly preferred.

* Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

* Ability to work in fast-paced environments, including outdoors and in varying weather conditions.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED, Minimum four years related experience. Minimum three year supervisory experience;
Bachelor's Degree in International Business, Logistics or Supply Chain Management, Transportation, Finance or related discipline preferred or equivalent combination of work experience and education.
