CDL Instructor – UM Launchpad at the University of Montana

Helena College, a two‑year comprehensive college, invites applications for a Commercial Driver’s License Instructor. We are seeking a skilled and experienced instructor with a CDL background who is ready to inspire and train the next generation of CD drivers as part of a collaborative team dedicated to student success.

CDL Instructors work closely with the Program Manager for Community Education and report to the Executive Director of Career Technical Education & Dual Enrollment.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver classroom and hands‑on training on vehicle operation, safety procedures, and regulatory compliance.
  • Teach students how to perform pre‑trip inspections, maneuver vehicles, and handle various driving conditions.
  • Provide instruction on Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). hours‑of‑service regulations, and cargo securement.
  • Ensure all training adheres to FMCSA standards and Montana CDL requirements.
  • Emphasize defensive driving techniques and accident prevention strategies.
  • Monitor and enforce safety protocols during all driving sessions.
  • Conduct skills assessments and provide constructive feedback to students.
  • Prepare students for written and practical CDL exams.
  • Maintain accurate training records and progress reports.
  • Verify that training vehicles are in safe operating condition.
  • Report and document any maintenance issues promptly.
  • Serve as a role model for professionalism and ethical conduct in the transportation industry.
  • Support and coach students in developing confidence and competence as commercial drivers.
  • Working primarily in evening program; may be the only staff person on site.
Qualifications
  • Valid CDL License:
    Current Commercial Driver’s License (Class

    A) with a clean driving record.
  • Driving

    Experience:

    Minimum of 2–3 years of verifiable experience operating commercial vehicles.
  • Knowledge of Regulations:
    Strong understanding of FMCSA regulations, DOT safety standards, and state CDL requirements.
  • Instructional Ability:
    Ability to clearly explain concepts and demonstrate driving techniques; patience and strong communication skills for working with adult learners.
  • Safety Awareness:
    Commitment to promoting safe driving practices and compliance with all laws.
  • Basic Mechanical Knowledge:
    Ability to teach and perform pre‑trip inspections and identify common vehicle issues.
  • Recordkeeping & Documentation:
    Competence in maintaining accurate student progress reports and training logs.
  • Technology

    Skills:

    Basic computer skills for scheduling, reporting, and using training software.
  • Physical Capability:
    Ability to climb into and out of trucks, stand for extended periods, and assist with vehicle maneuvers.
Preferred
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Thorough understanding of federal and state motor vehicle laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to driver licensing.
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow and enforce rules and requirements.
  • Dependable and reliable.
  • Exhibit initiative and accountability.

    Excellent communication skills.
  • Analytical thinking and problem solving.
Work Schedule

Temporary, part‑time appointment with potential for renewal. The position requires instructional assignments that may involve up to 40 hours per week for periods of up to six weeks at a time. These assignments occur intermittently, up to four times annually, with extended intervals of minimal or no scheduled hours between sessions.

Salary Information

$25–$28 per hour, dependent on qualifications.
