Description

The primary focus of the school social worker is to assist students whose emotional/social problems interfere with their ability to obtain maximum benefit from the educational program. The social worker may also act as a liaison between parents/guardians, school, and public or private agencies responsible for student care and services to help parents access available resources. The social worker will serve as a mentor to less experienced colleagues and participate in the Leona-wide crisis response team to support schools during major incidents.

Essential functions include:

• Conducting social work evaluations for students suspected of emotional/behavioral issues.
• Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings to review evaluations and make eligibility recommendations.
• Joining IEP meetings to determine social work support needs and developing goals.
• Providing social work services aligned with IEPs and documenting student progress.
• Conducting functional behavior assessments and creating behavior intervention plans.
• Training staff and assisting in implementing behavior plans.
• Maintaining confidential student records.
• Facilitating inclusion of students with behavior challenges in general education settings.
• Mentoring new social workers during their initial years.
• Offering pre-referral consultations and participating in child study teams.
• Consulting with families and connecting them to community resources.
• Training teachers on classroom management and behavior strategies.
• Serving as a liaison with community service agencies.
• Making home visits for family assessments.
• Assisting in crisis response planning and trauma support.
• Developing school-wide behavior strategies and providing related training.
• Delivering social skills training to students.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master's in social work with licensure or eligibility for endorsement as a school social worker.
• At least two years of successful school social work experience.
• Skills in assessment and treatment techniques.
• Ability to recommend eligibility for students with emotional/social issues.
• Effective communication skills.
• Knowledge of positive behavior interventions and plan development.
• Understanding of social skills for behavior change and community resources.
• Ability to handle stressful situations and work collaboratively.
