General Summary

Position:
Nurse Extern/Contingent

Shift: Midnight Shifts

• Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient using the nursing process.
• Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care.
• Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures.
• Recognizes and participates in own continuing education.

• High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent or currently enrolled in the Henry Ford Health Early College Program.
• Meets the completion of two clinical rotations at an accredited school of nursing.
• Enrolled in an accredited school of nursing.
• Completes two clinical rotations, one of which must be Med/Surg in an acute care setting.
• To remain in the extern role, you must:
• Actively be enrolled in a nursing program.
• Successfully complete each course.
• Provide transcripts to Nurse Manager after each semester/term.
• Provide a copy of your plan of work to your Nurse Manager.
• Maintain academic standards for continued enrollment; otherwise employment will be rescinded.
• Position is time limited:
  • ADN:
    Maximum 12 months.
  • BSN:
    Maximum 24 months (adjust for part-time BSN programs).
• May complete during orientation.
• Successful completion of a 180-day introductory period required to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit.

• Current Health Care Provider Certification required.
