Overview
General Summary The Director of Business Continuity and Emergency Management is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and sustainment of Henry Ford Health’s Emergency Management and Business Continuity Program in alignment with the organization’s strategic vision. The Director reports to a matrixed structure under the Chief Quality Officer and Medical Director, System Emergency Management. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, accreditation standards, and the adoption of best practices.
The Director develops and manages policies and programs to prepare the organization for significant disruptions while ensuring consistent and effective responses to critical events across the enterprise. As a subject matter expert, the Director oversees emergency preparedness, operational continuity, resilience through mitigation, incident response, and recovery efforts for Henry Ford Health.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, and execution of operational business continuity and emergency preparedness programs.
- Collaborate with leadership to set strategic direction and integrate emergency management efforts across the organization.
- Liaise with business units and service lines to align resilience strategy with organizational initiatives.
- Oversee strategic education and training initiatives for senior leaders, providers and frontline staff in incident management principles and identified top hazards.
- Design and implement system-wide tabletop, functional and full-scale exercises.
- Maintain emergency response technology, including the Mass Notification System and Electronic Incident Management and Business Continuity tools.
- May serve as a subject matter expert; chair or hold voting board positions on internal and external committees and work groups at the regional, state or federal level.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as CMS and Joint Commission accreditation requirements.
- Research and recommend best practices for emergency preparedness and response.
- Establish and maintain communications with leaders, physicians, and key stakeholders across the organization.
- Lead the organization’s crisis response and recovery efforts with emotional intelligence and executive influence.
- Delegate tasks to team members as appropriate.
- Prepare concise and effective written and oral communications for varied audiences.
- Oversee the program framework, including hazard vulnerability analysis, training, exercises, and Emergency Operations Plan updates.
- Ensure governance of emergency preparedness programs aligns with organizational goals.
- Facilitate senior leadership involvement and support of the program through participation, training, exercise and demonstrated benefits.
- Build relationships with clinical and non-clinical stakeholders to ensure engagement in preparedness efforts.
- Facilitate the development of a Hazardous Materials/CBRNE Decontamination program and related teams to meet OSHA guidance.
- Lead a high performing team (15+ FTEs) including day-to-day guidance, ongoing positive reinforcement, and constructive feedback.
- Monitor performance and manage team growth opportunities.
- Oversee the implementation of the Incident Command System (ICS), National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Business Resiliency Initiatives.
- Collaborate with enterprise senior leadership, Chief Quality Officer and Emergency Management Medical Director to set strategic direction for emergency preparedness and resilience initiatives.
- Develop an annual program calendar and track progress on goals.
- Develop an Enterprise Emergency Operations Plan including support and functional annexes to ensure compliance with CMS and Joint Commission standards.
- Develop business continuity and resilience strategies, including business impact analysis. Coordinate with Information Technology to align operational downtime planning initiatives in partnership with IT downtime related activities.
