Overview

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the overall cleanliness of the Main Campus and the Esther Gordy Edwards Centre for Excellence (EGEC).

Essential Functions
  • Notify Facility Manager concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems. In the absence of the Facility Manager, notify the Supervisor on duty.
  • Sweep and mop all hard surface floors.
  • Vacuum all carpeted areas.
  • Spot clean carpeted areas as needed.
  • Clean spills, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, glass doors, refrigerators, microwave ovens, coffee makers fixtures, mirrors and windows.
  • Clean and sanitize drinking fountains, water coolers, and restrooms using approved germicidal cleaners.
  • Empty trash receptacles and replace trash liners (interior and exterior).
  • Restock and touch up restrooms throughout the day.
  • Disinfect all high-touch areas in offices and public spaces.
  • Assist in cleaning of gallery spaces and exhibits.
  • Pick up litter from around the building and grounds.
  • Performs routine maintenance activities.
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment, such as floor scrubbers and buffers, extractor, etc.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down furniture needed for meetings.
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of event equipment and furniture for museum programs and special events.
  • Follow all OSHA health and safety procedures and security measures including opening and locking up the facilities at the end of the day.
  • Accept shipments and vendor deliveries and place them in the appropriate locations.
  • Ability to interact effectively, professionally, and courteously with visitors, staff and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning methods and procedures and ability to operate related equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules.
  • Interactive and fast-paced team-oriented tasks.
  • Ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks.
  • Comply with a flexible work schedule.
  • Ability to strip and polish tile floor surfaces a plus.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must possess attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Customer services minded.
  • Quality and results oriented.
Supervisory Responsibility

None

This position operates in a public environment.

Physical Demands/Strength

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk and use eye/hand/foot coordination. The employee is frequently required to stand, lift and carry at least 50 pounds, push or pull objects, stoop, reach, handle, grasp, communicate effectively, and hear. The position requires light to medium work with a little physical effort.

Environmental Conditions

Moderate noise and occasional temperature changes.

Expected Hours of Work

This position regularly requires weekend work and some evenings.

Education/Experience
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in a Custodian or similar position.
