Overview
DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is one of the nation’s largest hospitals specializing in rehabilitation medicine and research. RIM is known for its clinical expertise in spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputee, orthopedics and catastrophic injury care. The Institute houses the Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery and the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System (SEMTBIS), one of only 16 federally designated model systems of care for brain injury care and research.
RIM also operates 31 outpatient sites throughout southeast Michigan specializing in sports medicine and orthopedics.
- Diagnoses and treats speech, language, swallowing and cognitive disorders under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures; treats complex/specialty cases for assigned site(s).
- Diagnoses speech, language, cognitive and oral-pharyngeal swallowing disorders utilizing tests such as articulation, language, voice/resonance, fluency, cognitive communications skills, etc.
- Researches and analyzes patients’ medical history from test performances, medical records and case histories; designs treatment plans and administers treatment to patients with speech, language and swallowing disorders.
- Counsels, educates and advises patients and their families regarding communicative, cognitive and swallowing functioning; develops home programs as needed.
- Documents diagnostic reports and therapeutic progress notes; codes information for billing to ensure correct reimbursement from third party payers.
- Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team; attends chart rounds and departmental meetings; provides staff mentoring and develops/implements educational in-services for staff.
- Provides presentations and/or in-service education to professional staff, students, outside community, etc.; may instruct and monitor speech and language pathology interns.
- Enhances professional expertise through seminars, workshops, conferences, reading, professional organizations, etc.
- Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology.
- Current license to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist in the State of Michigan.
- Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association.
- Three years of clinical experience to acquire skills for independent patient treatment.
- Minimum of 60 points on the professional growth and development criteria.
