Overview
Despite being preventable and treatable, overdoses from heroin and other opioids continue to cause an alarming number of deaths in our region. The Ameri Corps Community Training for Overdose Rescue (ACT) program aims to stop overdose deaths, reduce harm caused by heroin and other opioids, and strengthen community engagement in addressing public health challenges. Our Ameri Corps members are critical in meeting these goals.
ACT is a rewarding opportunity for anyone who wants to make a difference. We welcome candidates of all backgrounds, and we provide extensive training and professional development for incoming members. This is a 6-month, fully in-person 20 hr/week paid service experience between April-November 2026.
- ACT members serve as Overdose Rescue Trainers and teach people in the tri-county area how to provide aid during an overdose emergency to help save lives.
- ACT members deliver overdose rescue education, raise awareness about opioid use disorder and harm reduction strategies, and distribute overdose rescue kits containing Narcan (an overdose-reversing nasal spray).
- The ACT program is based at Wayne State University's Center for Urban Studies, and our team serves the tri-county Detroit area (Wayne, Oakland, Macomb counties).
