Job Summary

In the Department of Health, Human, and Veterans Services, the Medical Assistant 1 works with the Clinical Care Services/Public Health clinic team in delivering vital health services to the community. The Medical Assistant 1, under clinic leadership supervision, provides both administrative and clinical support to ensure delivery of high quality, efficient and compassionate care.

Required Tasks
  • Registering patients, performing insurance verification, and collecting payments.
  • Scheduling appointments and managing providers schedules
  • Answering phone calls, responding to inquiries, and handling correspondence including faxes, scanning, and mail.
  • Updating and maintaining patient records and electronic health records (EHR).
  • Managing inventory of medical and office supplies and maintenance of equipment.
  • Collecting and documenting patient information such as medical history, purpose of visit, results, into electronic health record.
  • Preparing examination rooms and ensuring rooms are stocked.
  • Preparing patients for examination by performing preliminary tests and screening; taking vital signs; and obtaining patient history summary.
  • Preparing patients for medical procedures and assisting with treatments.
  • Collecting, processing, and packaging laboratory specimens, including blood and urine samples.
  • Performing basic laboratory tests such as urinalysis or phlebotomy, including point of care tests.
  • Administering medications as directed by the physician and maintaining medication inventory.
  • Conducting basic patient education.
  • Performing electrocardiograms (EKGs) and other diagnostic tests.
  • Performing check-out procedures including reviewing instructions and follow-up recommendations.
  • Assisting as needed with billing claim submission.
  • Ensuring patient confidentiality and privacy at all times and complying with all HIPAA related policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Adhering to regulatory requirements and maintaining compliance with public health and healthcare standards and protocols.
  • Conducting health screenings for community members, such as blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings, and diabetes screenings.
  • Providing support and referrals to community members seeking access to healthcare services, social services, or other resources.
  • Performing clinic administrative duties including greeting patients, completing the check-in/registration process, scheduling appointments and completing reminder calls, handling phone calls and correspondences, and maintaining medical records.
  • Completing clinical and patient flow tasks including taking vital signs, collecting patient history, assisting with procedures, collecting and preparing lab and point of care lab and diagnostic tests, exam room preparation, and assisting with patient education.
  • Assisting in inventory management of medical and office supplies and ensuring exam rooms are stocked appropriately.
  • Performing check-out/discharge tasks including coordinating referrals
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Educational Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Graduate from a medical assistant training program
  • Valid Michigan driver's license
  • Preferred:
    Certification as a Medical Assistant
Experience Requirements
  • At least one (1) year of experience as a medical assistant in a healthcare setting
  • A CPR certification must be acquired within 30 days of employment

Salary: $45,153 - $67,730 per year
