A DMC University Laboratories, Inc. employee under the general direction of a pathologist assists in all aspects of anatomic pathology, describing and examining surgical specimens and preparing them for histology processing. Responsibilities also include performing autopsy prosections, obtaining the appropriate specimens for microscopic evaluation, determining adequacy of fine‑needle aspirates and renal biopsies, and providing instruction to medical students on autopsy and surgical pathology techniques.

• Under the direction of a pathologist, perform prosections and dictate gross descriptions of surgical specimens.
• Ensure that appropriate legal permission has been obtained to perform autopsies and assist pathologists and clinicians in obtaining permission if necessary.
• Prepare abstracts of medical semana and present them to pathologists prior to beginning an autopsy.

• Transfer and handle bodies from morgue to autopsy table.
• Conduct autopsies from start to finish, including description, prosection, selection, collection and submission of designated specimens for microscopic evaluation and special studies.
• Conduct training seminars, instructing pathology‑assistant students in technique and protocol of autopsy and gross surgical pathology, and demonstrate gross pathology protocol to new residents.

• Prepare fine‑needle pvc aspirates and renal biopsy specimens for examination using appropriate laboratory techniques and protocols, and examine specimens for adequacy.
• Evaluate and provide feedback on student projects.
• Assist with sections/specimens utilizing cryostat, staining and coverslip slides, and maintain frozen‑section equipment.
• Assist in performing and/or 기다 pathologist or designate in tasks related to medical photography.
• Maintain procedure manuals in accordance with practice guidelines and regulatory agency requirements.

• Graduate from a Bachelor’s Pathology Assistant program or successfully complete a post‑bachelor’s program from an approved school of Pathology Assistants. Alternatively, hold a bachelor’s degree in sciences with a background in physiology and anatomy and have 3‑5 years of experience in pathology.
• Certification by the American Association of Pathology Assistants (AAPA) or the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as a Pathology Assistant, or attain such certification within six (6) months of employment to retain employment at DMCUL.

DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system serving the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, DMCUL includes Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, fantas hospital laboratories, a Centralized Stat Lab, a Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and a full‑service outreach infrastructure. The laboratory offers a menu of over 1,000 tests, minimum reference laboratory outsourcing, and provides reference services to other southeastern Michigan health systems and out‑of‑state facilities.
