Community Recovery Coach – Emergency Department – 40 hr/week – Afternoons – Detroit
Join the Henry Ford Health system as a Community Recovery Coach in the Emergency Department. This full‑time role (40 hr/week, afternoons) focuses on outreach and engagement with survivors of an opioid overdose after discharge.
General SummaryThe Community Recovery Coach is a peer recovery coach (PRC) who provides non‑clinical services to help patients establish recovery and reduce the risk of subsequent overdose. The Coach assists with referrals to recovery support and substance use treatment services, develops service plans, and provides continuity of care in our community EDs and via telephonic follow‑up.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct screenings to understand the patient’s history of drug and/or alcohol use, treatment history, social service and other recovery support needs, and motivation to change behavior.
- Facilitate the patient’s readiness for change and use motivational interviewing techniques to support and encourage the patient to plan for reduction or elimination of drug and alcohol use.
- Assist patients in setting personal recovery goals.
- Work with the healthcare team and the patient to identify community supports and treatment services to promote recovery.
- Support patients and families in accessing community resources.
- Assist patients in linking to community supports and treatment services, including helping secure transportation and other resources.
- Act as a peer supporter after the patient is discharged from the hospital, engaging via phone in various community settings.
- Provide family members with recovery support materials.
- Provide education on overdose risks and ensure that patients and significant others have naloxone and are trained to use it.
- Complete required reports and other necessary documentation accurately.
- High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
- Ability to read, interpret documents and write routine reports.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with detailed information.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with patients and health professionals.
- Patience and tact when dealing with patients, families, and other staff; integration of Continuous Quality Improvement principles.
- Ability to work with people of all social, economic, and cultural backgrounds; flexibility, open‑mindedness and adaptability.
- Willingness to learn and acquire new skills.
- Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Certified Peer Recovery Coach (CPRC), or equivalent from the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professions (MCBAP), or other agencies approved by MDHHS.
