Emergency Dispatcher -E8 - Intelligence Operations​/Detroit Regional Communication Center

Position Summary

The dispatcher is an essential and crucial part of the law enforcement team. Dispatchers act in partnership with police officers working the road and supply critical information and crucial services for their day-to-day operation. They conduct preliminary investigations, interpret complex computer printouts, coordinate the deployment of emergency personnel and equipment during crisis situations, and perform routine assignments. A working knowledge of interrogation techniques, CPR, and Basic First Aid is required for this position.

This position will perform functions in a bias-free manner.

The Michigan State Police (MSP) is a full-service policing agency with statewide jurisdiction, providing over 60 different services either directly to Michigan residents or in support of other law enforcement agencies. The MSP personnel most visible to the public are the uniform troopers whose primary responsibilities include traffic enforcement, crime prevention and investigation, and community engagement and service.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

No specific type or amount of experience is required for Emergency Dispatcher 7. One year of experience equivalent to an Emergency Dispatcher 7 is required for Emergency Dispatcher E8.

Licenses and

Certifications:

CPR certification is required. Candidates for positions at the Department of State Police must possess CPR certification and pass the agency-administered examination that tests applicants’ computer and other dispatching-related skills. This position requires passing a pre-employment screening, including a criminal history background check and a fingerprint check by the Michigan State Police.

Applicants will be selected for interviews based on the following screening criteria:

• Scoring on pre-employment basic aptitude test (if required)
• Demonstrated knowledge of Emergency Dispatch Center operations
• Demonstrated knowledge of communication and computerized equipment required to operate an emergency communications system, including the MPSCS 800 MHz system
• Experience in communicating effectively with law enforcement personnel and external agencies
• Experience in public safety and emergency service operations
• Writing ability as demonstrated through resume and accompanying documentation
• Education and training relevant to the position
