Garage Attendant / Elevator Operator (Detroit Towers)

Title: Garage Attendant
Classification: Bargaining Unit, Regular Full-Time
FLSA: Non-exempt (Hourly)
General Description: The Garage Attendant is responsible for parking and retrieving cars for co-owners. Greeting co-owners and assisting with packages, groceries, and luggage. Inspecting vehicles and identifying and reporting damage. Having good driving and parking skills to support the Detroit Towers Condominium Association.
Reports to: Property Management Company
Supervises: This is a non-supervisory position.
Essential Functions- Respond to owner requests for cars out of the garage; return cars to the garage upon arrival; quickly greet co-owner to determine their needs.
- Keep track of standard times for specific cars to be out of the garage (i.e., every weekday morning at 8:15 for Mr. or Mrs. XX).
- Keep track of owner preferences on the car – heat on/off, seat up or back, car locked or not, steering wheel high/low, fan on/off, etc.
- Update owner names and phone numbers as registered Contacts in the garage cell phone.
- Respond to all calls on cell phone; return “missed calls” in the Recent Calls listing after every return to the desk.
- Clean, sweep, and vacuum the back door area and freight elevator daily.
- Upon Request – Fill cars with windshield washer fluid, clean windshields, put air in tires as needed, and vacuum front footwells, seats, and package areas/trunks.
- Respond to the driveway bell and be prepared to help upon owners' arrival.
- Provide guidance to visitors on parking, mask policy, etc.
- Notify Property Management Company or Board President of owner and visitor parking violations.
- Load groceries and packages in “buggy” and deliver to kitchen door upon request.
- Monitor and supervise contractor parking, movers, and furniture/appliance deliveries.
- Transport contractors to various units for arranged work. Ensure that contractors know the “house rules” regarding start time, finish time, smoking, parking, etc.
- Clear the voice messages on the garage cell phone daily.
- Listen for driveway ringer and be available for packages, assistance, or messages (i.e., “it’s OK to put my car up”).
- Keep the Garage Attendant work area clean and organized (I.e., clear of food, trash, equipment, materials, etc.).
- Walk the property and pick up trash – 2 hours into shift. This task should be rotated between both employees on the shift.
- Be alert at the desk; don’t let TV distract from paying attention to overall workspace and the exterior of the building.
- At the beginning of your shift and at least one additional time during your shift, sweep outside from the back door to the garage, remove all debris, weeds, cigarette butts, etc., from the flower beds and plant pots in the front of the building.
- Check the heat in the Penthouse and water tower room daily.
- Ensure that the Property Management Company has approved contractors.
- Enforce the clock on contractor work– no earlier than 9 a.m., no later than 5 p.m., no weekends.
- Ensure that contractors have “written” permission to be in units – keep a log or file of who is where.
- Water the flowers in the front, concrete vases in the wall, and the pots on the terrace.
- Walk the riverfront at least twice during the shift to check everything out.
- Check vacant or non-occupied units for dropped windows, steam leaks, faucet drips, and leaky toilets, and confirm that heat is on low in winter – Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Pull trash and recycling; mop landings daily between 7-9 p.m. – Monday through Friday.
- Walk to the riverfront periodically when owners/guests use the terrace and patio.
- Mop stairs and rails from top to bottom as needed, not less than weekly. Vacuum the freight elevator carpet and mop the back floors by the storage lockers.
- Clean the staff bathroom once per shift unless use requires more frequently. This includes the sink(s), counter, mirror, toilet, and floor. Empty trash can(s) and re-supply toilet paper and towels.
