Environmental Engineering — Water/Wastewater Treatment

Job Type: Graduate

Job Rank:
Graduate Research Assistant

Job Institution:
Wayne State University

Job Description:

Are you interested in research that protects waterways, improves public infrastructure, and supports regional sustainability? The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Wayne State University is seeking a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) for a multi-year Master’s thesis project focused on reducing phosphorus discharges from the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF)—the largest single-site wastewater treatment plant in the United States.

As phosphorus regulations become more restrictive, this research will help develop new strategies to safeguard the Great Lakes. The GRA will work closely with Wayne State researchers and GLWA staff to study phosphorus behavior within the WRRF, conduct field sampling, perform advanced phosphorus and iron speciation, develop predictive models, and evaluate innovative treatment approaches. This is a unique opportunity to address real-world engineering challenges, gain hands-on experience at a nationally significant facility, and present your findings at regional, national, and international conferences.

The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field and possess a strong background in environmental chemistry
. Because the project involves regular onsite work at the GLWA WRRF, candidates must be able to obtain the necessary security clearance and have personal transportation
. Additional experience in wastewater treatment, engineering fieldwork, nutrient analysis, wet-chemistry methods, or laboratory analytical techniques is highly valued, though not required.
Domestic U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply , please submit (1) a resume or CV
, and (2) a cover letter describing how your academic and professional experiences prepare you for this project and your motivation for pursuing a Master of Science in Civil Engineering or Environmental and Sustainability Engineering at Wayne State University. Application materials should be uploaded at: go.wayne.edu/GLWA-phosphorus.
