This position leads various bridge inspection projects for cities, counties, villages, and MDOT. Inspections include but are not limited to bridge scoping, routine safety inspections, in-depth inspections, detailed inspections, fracture critical inspections, fatigue sensitive inspections, scour inspections, etc. The position requires a strong understanding of structural engineering concepts related to the operation of bridges and culverts of various material types and design types.
This position leads the overseeing of load rating capacity calculations and models for in-service bridges and culverts and assists with the preparation of contract proposals. Ability to work as team leader, team member, and independently complete assigned inspections within set time frames. Maintain working relationships with clients.
- Perform routine bridge inspections as a Qualified Team Leader (QTL) within the State of Michigan.
- Assist with the preparation of proposals.
- Lead an inspection team in bridge inspection fieldwork including:
- Identifying, measuring, and quantifying deterioration on various material types
- Field documentation including notes, drawings, and photos
- Lead an inspection team in bridge report preparation including:
- Preparation of photo logs
- Drafting various bridge inspection reports, including but not limited to bridge scoping, in-depth inspections, detailed inspections, fracture critical inspections, scour inspections, etc.
- Assist with marketing activities related to MDOT, Municipal, and other clients.
- Assist with department management activities.
- Lead the process of obtaining permits necessary to perform fieldwork.
- Schedule and coordinate field work including coordination with entities that may include traffic control contractors, MDOT Reach-All, railroads.
- Work independently in the preparation of load rating models.
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever working conditions require safety equipment.
- Willingness to work at heights up to 100 ft., in and around flowing water, work from various watercrafts, work around heavy traffic volumes.
- Willingness to work extended hours, including possible nights and weekends, depending on project demands.
- Able to work outdoors in Michigan year-round.
- Able to learn how to operate a bucket truck with vertical reach up to 45 ft.
- Use various hand tools including chipping hammers, measuring tools, and NDT equipment.
- Assist with the mentoring of Engineering Interns.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Ability to successfully complete NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges class REQUIREMENTS
- Qualified Team Leader (QTL) in Michigan
- Possession of a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Ability to obtain Michigan chauffeur’s license and pass DOT physical within 12 months of employment.
