Environmental Educator – MSU Kellogg Bird Sanctuary (Temporary Hourly)
Location: KBS, Hickory Corners, MI
Compensation: Starting at $18/hour (non–benefits eligible)
About The Position
The Kellogg Bird Sanctuary (KBS) in Augusta, MI—part of Michigan State University’s Kellogg Biological Station—is seeking enthusiastic Environmental Educators to lead hands‑on, place‑based learning experiences for youth and community groups. Educators help advance KBS’s mission to build environmental awareness through research, education, and outreach.
Position Summary
Environmental Educators deliver high‑quality programs at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, including field trips, guided tours, and special events. This part‑time, seasonal position runs from early April through July
, with training beginning in mid‑April. Typical schedules are 2–3 days per week
, primarily on weekdays, with occasional evenings and weekends.
- Deliver dynamic indoor and outdoor environmental education programs for grades 4–12, college groups, and adults.
- Engage the community by supporting school visits, open houses, and special events.
- Create meaningful, inquiry‑based learning experiences that inspire curiosity and connection to nature.
- Organize and reset program spaces and maintain educational materials and equipment.
- Participate fully in pre‑season training, program setup, and end‑of‑season wrap‑up.
- Represent MSU and KBS with professionalism while adhering to all MSU policies.
- Complete additional tasks as assigned by the Outreach Coordinator.
- Passion for environmental education and connecting people with the natural world.
- Broad understanding of ecological concepts, environmental issues, and human impacts on ecosystems.
- Experience working with youth or mixed‑age groups in educational or recreational settings.
- Ability to adapt instruction to diverse ages, learning styles, and backgrounds.
- Teaching experience in formal or informal settings (environmental education, outdoor recreation, interpretation, classroom teaching, etc.).
- Commitment to the mission of the Kellogg Biological Station.
This role involves significant outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions. Candidates should be able to:
- Spend several hours outdoors in heat, cold, rain, snow, or wind.
- Stand and walk for the duration of a typical 2.5‑hour program plus prep time.
- Navigate uneven terrain such as grass and asphalt.
- Lift up to 25 pounds and assist with emergency procedures if needed.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in environmental studies, biology, natural resources, science education, or a related field.
- CPR and First Aid certification (training provided).
