Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Academic Services Officer III (ASO III) for the College of Engineering – Department of Industrial & Systems at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions

The Academic Services Officer III (ASO III) serves as the primary and senior undergraduate admissions and academic advising specialist for the Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) Department. The position focuses on growing and managing the undergraduate enrollment pipeline and supporting student success through advising and retention initiatives.

Working in close collaboration with the University Undergraduate Admissions Office, College of Engineering advising staff, and the ISE Department Chair, the ASO III:

  • Builds and manages the undergraduate admissions funnel from inquiry through enrollment.
  • Engages admitted students and their families to increase yield and reduce melt.
  • Provides academic advising and student success support for current and incoming ISE students, with particular attention to transfer and pre-engineering pathways.
  • Graduate admissions activities are supported primarily through separate teams; the ASO I may provide departmental information or coordination as needed but will focus on undergraduate programs.
Undergraduate Admissions & Enrollment Management
  • Coordinate with University Undergraduate Admissions
  • Serve as the primary ISE liaison to the College of Engineering recruitment staff
  • Monitor ISE program visibility in university recruitment materials, websites, and campus tours and recommend updates to ensure accurate, compelling representation
  • Participate in admissions planning meetings and working groups as requested to align departmental goals with college/university enrollment strategies
  • Manage the Undergraduate Admissions Funnel
  • Use university systems (e.g., CRM, student information systems) to track prospects, inquiries, applicants, admits, and enrollees for ISE programs
  • Identify incomplete applications and proactively contact students to help them submit missing materials or resolve questions
  • Provide Amely, accurate information to prospective students and families on admission requirements, program options, scholarships (as appropriate), and next steps in the process
High School & Community College Recruitment (Undergraduate Focus)
  • Identify priority feeder high schools and community colleges in collaboration with central recruitment teams
  • Conduct targeted recruitment visits (individual and group) focused on increasing applications and qualified interest in ISE undergraduate programs
  • Develop and deliver presentations that explain Industrial & Systems Engineering, program structures, career pathways, and the value of ISE within the College of Engineering
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with school counselors, community college advisors, and relevant student organizations to support ongoing undergraduate recruitment
Admitted-Student Engagement & Yield Management
  • Implement structured communication plans (email, phone, text, virtual meetings) to engage admitted undergraduate students between admission and registration
  • Provide individualized support to admitted students and families regarding registration, orientation, financial aid referrals, housing referrals, and other enrollment steps
  • Coordinate admitted-student events (virtual and in-person) such as department information sessions, lab tours, and meet-and-greet opportunities with faculty, current students, and alumni
  • Identify and address common barriers to enrollment (e.g., confusion about mathematics placement, transfer credit concerns, scheduling issues) by working closely with advising and other campus offices
