Position Title:Director of Operations - Division of School Nutrition

Location: Support Service Building C, 1601 Farnsworth, Detroit, MI 48201

Reports to: Executive Director of Office of School Nutrition

Bargaining Unit: OSAS

In accordance with the Agreement between the Organization of School Administrators and supervisors and the Detroit Public School Community District the following vacancy is announced:

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Executive Director of School Nutrition, functions as the operations manager for School Nutrition within the schools. Monitors and directs the various food programs and oversees and manages the performance of field personnel.

Assures that the nutritional and program goals established by DPSCD School Nutrition and federal and state agencies are implemented and maintained. Establishes menus, maintains food inventories and assures compliance at the school level. Provides training and works to establish new programs through a wide network of public and private contacts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in institutional food service management, food and nutrition, business administration or a related field.

Serve Safe Certification

Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in School Nutrition or administrative management, preferably in a public school district

Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License

Substantial knowledge of the laws, regulations and professional practices associated with food services and nutritional requirements established by the federal government.

Skilled in compiling management reports and grants reporting Skilled in implementing diverse programs and services, and directing the utilization of personnel, equipment and other resources

Ability to communicate effectively, presents ideas and concepts orally and in writing, and makes presentations in a public forum

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with employees, professional contacts, school district officials, and the public in a variety of cooperative and contentious situations

Ability to critically assess situations, effectively plan and implement plans, and work effectively under stress, with deadlines and changes in work priorities

Ability to attend meetings scheduled at times other than normal business hours and travel to other locations

Microsoft 365 power user (Teams, SharePoint/One Drive, Forms) for knowledge hubs, SOPs, and field communications; basic PDF tools for forms/packets

Advanced Excel/Google Sheets

Experience administering k-12 cafeteria tech at scale (50+ sites), including POS accountability systems (e.g., LINQ/TITAN, Primero Edge, Mosaic/One Source, Meals Plus)

Essential Functions:

Responsible for direct supervision of food service field operations.

Supervises Area Managers and by extension, all school-based food service personnel.

Evaluates performance, responds to problems and initiates changes in programs, menus and reporting.

Assures the adequate training and development of school-based staff. Develops training programs and leads the training process and professional development.

Assures the successful and consistent application of school meal standards for all foods served or sold in schools and other programs. Performs menu planning and assures food pattern compliance and point-of-service accountability for all schools and other meal sites.

Implement grant and other food programs in the schools. Writes specifications for products, orders food and food related items and monitors the schools to assure they are in compliance.

Maintains purchasing systems and supply chains consistent with USDA and state purchasing guidelines.

Interfaces with community groups and others to develop and initiate school-based programs involving students. Assists in identifying learning materials for students and plays an active role in implementing and monitoring each program.
