This position exists to maintain, repair and renovate state highway bridges and to construct, repair or renovate miscellaneous structures so that industry standards are met and safety is ensured. This position will also assist in snow and ice control.
Job DutiesFunction:
Bridge Maintenance
- Performs and maintains necessary repairs and installations in the area of steel fabrication and erection of bridges and structures.
- Performs concrete work for the construction/repair of bridges and structures.
- Performs carpentry duties related to bridges, buildings and structures.
- Cleans and prepares bridges, buildings, and structure surfaces for painting.
- Assists with or leads safety inspections on bridges and structures.
- Transfers and operates the full range of heavy equipment used by MnDOT.
- Determines proper traffic control layout in accordance with the Traffic Control Field Manual.
- Determines equipment, tools, materials and supplies needed to complete assignment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Function:
Snow & Ice
- Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
- Prepares and inspects winter equipment - maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and clean equipment post storm.
- Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post-storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
- Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction within 6 months of hire.
Experience:
The level of experience to perform this job at the TGS level can be achieved with:
- Two years of experience performing carpentry OR concrete OR iron work OR a combination of one or more of these activities.
- Educational Substitution: A two-year technical trades training or degree (e.g., carpentry, concrete/masonry, etc.) or equivalent may be substituted for one year of experience.
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
- Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist
The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically require lifting up to 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects and/or tools weighing 50 pounds. This job may require walking or standing on rough terrain or may involve sitting with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. Heavy manual labor includes digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.
Incumbent must be able to wear a respirator for some portions of the work. Weather elements: frequent exposure to weather elements daily.

The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test.
