The Gulfarium is seeking a Sea Turtle Stranding Coordinator for the Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Center to oversee the daily operations of its sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation, and release program. This position serves as the primary coordinator for stranding response, rehabilitation support, volunteer and intern management, and regulatory reporting in compliance with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) guidelines.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Sea Turtle Rehabilitation & Medical Support
Coordinate and assist with sea turtle intakes, including morphometric measurements, blood collection, radiographs, wound care, and hook removal
Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and fluid therapy
Assist with veterinary procedures, including turtles under anesthesia
Perform necropsies on deceased patients
Maintain accurate medical, feeding, and treatment records in TRACKS
Monitor patient condition and communicate concerns to veterinary staff
Stranding Response & Agency Coordination
Serve as primary point of contact for incoming sea turtle strandings, including weekends and holidays
Coordinate live stranding responses in collaboration with FWC and regional partners
Organize and execute sea turtle releases per permit requirements
Communicate regularly with FWC, regional stranding networks, and partner organizations regarding intakes, transfers, and releases
Ensure compliance with interstate transfer and release protocols when applicable
Recruit, interview, train, and schedule rehabilitation volunteers
Coordinate and manage seasonal stranding team volunteers
Oversee internship program recruitment, training, scheduling, and mentorship
Provide clear communication and leadership to volunteers and interns to ensure daily operational needs are met
Coordinate volunteer participation during public releases and outreach events
Operations, Records, & Permitting
Order and maintain medical supplies, laboratory consumables, and tagging materials
Maintain hospital and habitat cleanliness standards
Operate and maintain medical and diagnostic equipment, including anesthesia machine, digital radiography, cold laser, and sterilization equipment
Prepare and submit required state and federal permits and reports (rehabilitation, stranding, volunteer, educational tours)
Maintain organized digital records in accordance with permit requirements
Provide patient updates and content support to leadership and marketing staff as requested
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Marine Biology, or related field
Experience working with sea turtles in a rehabilitation or clinical setting
Experience with blood draws, injectable medications, and fluid therapy
Experience assisting in veterinary medical procedures and necropsies
Familiarity with FWC sea turtle stranding and rehabilitation reporting processes
Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. and work long, irregular hours
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Must have excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Power Point
Proficient at driving the stranding transit van and stranding UTV
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with diagnostic equipment (radiography, anesthesia, cold laser)
Experience with TRACKs or similar animal record-keeping software
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
This is a full-time salaried position, commensurate with experience. Company benefits offered include 50 %coverage of health care, accrued time off, and compay 401 K.
