HVAC Technician – Department of Administrative Services

The Iowa Department of Administrative Services is looking for a dedicated HVAC Technician to join our team. What You’ll Do:- Install, operate, maintain, and repair heating and cooling systems including gas‑fired and electric heat, forced air systems, radiant heat, heat pumps, packaged terminal units, chillers, refrigeration units, and low‑ and high‑pressure steam boilers.
- Manage and maintain air conditioning and refrigeration systems such as chillers, window units, packaged units, heat exchangers, and chilled water systems.
- Operate, monitor, and maintain Building Automation Systems (BAS), including associated hardware and software; perform system upgrades, preventive maintenance, and adjustments to maintain system accuracy efficiency.
- Conduct routine and advanced inspections of HVAC, heating, distribution, and refrigeration systems to ensure proper operation and compliance with trade standards.
- Perform diagnostic testing using visual, audible, mechanical, and electronic methods to isolate system malfunctions, leaks, or control issues.
- Inspect, service, and replace components such as motors, belts, bearings, compressors, condensers, valves, pumps, fans, humidifiers, controls, gauges, refrigerant lines, and ductwork.
- Perform leak testing on gas and refrigerant systems; inspect gas lines and regulators; monitor oil, refrigerant, and insulation levels; and clean, lubricate, and adjust equipment as needed.
- Troubleshoot and repair boiler systems, hot water loops, pneumatic and electrical controls, dampers, valves, relays, pressure and temperature sensors, and BAS‑connected components.
- Design, install, and modify ductwork and HVAC distribution systems; calculate system sizing; and prepare working sketches or layouts when needed.
- Identify maintenance needs, diagnose root causes of system issues, complete repairs when authorized, or request work orders for additional support.
- Record all maintenance and repair work in a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Review construction drawings and specifications; estimate materials and labor; research parts and pricing; and submit purchase orders and required documentation.
- Communicate with supervisors, customers, and building occupants to assess issues, explain work performed, and provide status updates.
- Perform additional maintenance or construction‑related tasks under general supervision as assigned.
