Overview
Summary: This supervisory position located within the Central Iowa VAHCS is responsible for Engineering Operations and maintenance of a wide variety of systems such as Steam Boilers, Chilled Water production, Emergency Power Generation, Natural Gas, Domestic Water supply, Building Automated Control System (BACS), Integrated Fire Alarm System, Nurse Call System, Electronic Compliance Monitoring System (Checkpoint), and Electronic Security System.

EXPERIENCE:
A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Screen-out element: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:
Dexterity and Safety, Assembly - Installation - Repair, Interpret Instructions - Specifications (other than blueprint reading), Lead or Supervise, Measuring Instruments, Operation of Equipment/Machinery, Technical Practices.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be physically capable of monitoring accomplishment of the tasks assigned to the Operations Section. He/she must be able to perform moderate walking, bending, crawling, climbing and standing. The position does not require qualification to operate steam boilers.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office, maintenance shop, or jobsite. There is frequent exposure to dirt, grease, noise, and machinery. Incumbent may be required to troubleshoot equipment in remote areas. There is a possibility of exposure to asbestos, contagious disease, and physical hazards. Occasionally work may be in extreme hot and cold temperatures, both inside and outside. May also work around equipment and machinery that has excessive noise.
Duties- Major duties listed but not limited to:
Plans daily, weekly and monthly work schedules and sequence of operations for subordinates - Determines how many assignments can be done concurrently, how many must be delayed, and the number and types of employees needed, considering skills, personnel, materials and equipment available and required
- Explains work requirements, methods and procedures, instructs subordinates in new procedures and provides advice when problems arise
- Schedules and approves leave of subordinates
- Sets performance requirements and makes formal and informal performance appraisals
- Assures compliance with fire, safety, security, conduct, housekeeping and other pertinent rules and regulations
- Performs other duties as assigned
