BASIC FUNCTION:
The Substitute Sign Language Interpreter is responsible for sign language interpretation duties in connection with the DMPS Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program & Services and performs related duties as required. The Substitute Sign Language Interpreter is responsible for: interpreting spoken language and signed language as well as conveying information about environmental cues; facilitating communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and others;
using ASL/PSE when interpreting; and assisting deaf and hard of hearing students, as guided by IEP, when not interpreting. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1) Interpret spoken language and signed language as well as conveying information about environmental cues.
2) Facilitating communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and others.
3) Use ASL/PSE when interpreting.
4) Assisting deaf and hard of hearing students, as guided by IEP, when not interpreting.
ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position):
1. Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
2. Maintain confidentiality.
3. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
4. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:
Required:
1) A temporary or permanent interpreting license by the state of Iowa.
2) The ability to work with students in kindergarten through high school.
3) The willingness to work at various school sites throughout the district.
4) The ability to obtain transportation to various schools.
5) The ability to exhibit bilingual skills in ASL and English.
6) The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, educators, students, and families.
Desired:
1) Able to sub on short notice.
