Summary

The VA Central Iowa Health Care System is recruiting for 1 full‑time Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound) for the Diagnostic Imaging Service Line.

Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education:

    There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
  • Licensure or Certification:
    Not required, but highly desirable to hold GS‑6 or higher evidence of essential KSA.
  • Physical Requirements:

    You will be asked to participate in a pre‑employment examination or evaluation; questions about physical demands may be addressed at that time. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Must be proficient in spoken and written English per chapter 2 – section D – paragraph 5a.
  • Grade Determinations: GS‑9.
  • Experience:

    At least 1 year of comparable experience directly related to the duties; must meet KSAs at that level.
  • Technical KSAs:
    • Knowledge of complex examination and treatment procedures, training and supervision, performance improvement projects, policy writing related to diagnostic ultrasonography.
    • Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
    • Effective communication across employee grade levels.
    • Ability to provide staff development and training.
  • Certification:
    • Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable.
    • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable.
    • Preferred Experience:

      Abd – OB/GYN and/or Vascular Registry.
Duties
  • The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers.
  • Operate within a model with three core elements: personalized health plan, healing relationships, healing environments, connection back to the Veteran’s community.
  • Coordinate patient care, maintain records in the Vista radiology package, input into scheduling, explain procedures.
  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations on multiple areas: abdomen, pelvis, transvaginal, chest, small parts, thyroid, breast, scrotum.
  • Conduct vascular studies: carotid duplex, ABI, arterial duplex, venous duplex, renal artery duplex, visceral vascular exams.
  • Pre‑operative upper/lower extremity vein mappings, chronic venous insufficiency studies.
  • Assist radiologists with biopsy procedures, surgical procedures, fluid aspirations; enforce sterile technique.
  • Differentiate artifacts from normal/pathological processes, recognize equipment limitations, consult with staff radiologist for diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with employees at varying grade levels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within scope of MIT technologist.
  • Dedicate 25% travel; valid driver’s license required.
  • Work Schedule:

    Monday‑Friday 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (on‑call rotated).
  • Paid Time Off: 13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays per year.
  • Parental Leave: up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months employment.
  • Child Care Subsidy: up to 25% of eligible costs for employees with family income below $144,000 after 60 days employment.
