Overview
Shift: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and every other Saturday and Sunday 8am-4:30pm. The Patient Access Representative is responsible for facilitating patient admission, registration, insurance verification, and scheduling, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in the registration process. The role addresses patient inquiries and manages patient way finding. The role also supports administrative tasks and ensures compliance with financial and insurance procedures.
Responsibilities- Accurately and thoroughly collects, analyzes and records demographic, insurance/financial and clinical data in computer systems. Ensures information source is appropriate.
- Completes eligibility checks and obtains benefits through electronic means or via phone contact with insurance carriers or other agencies.
- Reviews and explains all registration forms prior to obtaining signatures from patient or appropriate patient representative.
- Explains benefits and requests copay, deductible and coinsurance as applicable after developing an estimate applying allowable amounts based on payer.
- Balances cash drawer at the end of each shift to ensure cash, checks and payments made by credit card are accounted for and balanced.
- Identifies patients in financial hardship and refers to Patient Financial Coordinators/Certified Application Counselors for charity/financial assistance.
- Performs follow-up visits to patients in nursing areas, ER treatment rooms or clinical departments to obtain additional registration information, documents and/or signatures. Follow-up may be performed via phone if appropriate, with a witness if necessary.
- Answers telephone calls promptly and accurately. Takes messages and directs calls in a professional manner.
- Retrieves, files photocopies or scans medical correspondence, reports and miscellaneous items as requested.
- Work or shifts at any of the 3 campuses (ILH, IMMC, and West) could be a possibility for Patient Access roles.
- Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree or DMACC Patient Access Certificate preferred. Those interested in tuition assistance for this certificate may contact DMACC Workforce Training Academy at . - Experience:
Prior customer service experience is required. - Preferred experience:
Two years in a hospital patient access/patient accounts department, medical office/clinic or insurance company; experience interacting with patients; working knowledge of third-party payers; experience conducting financial conversations requesting payment for services; prior experience with verification and payer benefit and eligibility systems; knowledge of medical terminology. - License/Certification:
Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. - Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Technical aptitude, data entry, communication (written and verbal), customer/patient focus, interpersonal skills, prioritization, multicultural sensitivity, planning/organizing, problem solving, professionalism, teamwork. - Preferred:
Flexibility of schedule, EPIC.
