Corporate Controller – Wholesale Construction Materials Distributorship
Location: Des Moines, IA
Our client is a building materials dealership operating for nearly 75 years in Des Moines, Iowa. The firm sells and distributes major-brand windows and doors, siding, roofing, insulation, and accessories into the housing and commercial construction community in major Midwest Markets.
Reporting to the President as the majority owner, this Controllership opportunity is immediately available due to the retirement of the long-serving incumbent. The company is seeking an experienced operational accounting professional with strong general business acumen, well-versed in all aspects of the types of issues facing an SMB-scale operating environment. The business requires an emphasis on supporting a sales-focused culture within a credit and collections-sensitive environment, requiring tight inventory, reporting, and strict aging controls.
The incumbent Controller will be retained to assist with an orderly transition of duties. Excellent benefits schedule with retirement and health.
The Controller oversees an accounting and back‑office support team of up to five individuals, including HR duties and IT oversight. The Controller will maintain the established standard of audit-proof recordkeeping within the corporate environment while also bringing strong acumen as a financial advisor to the principal ownership.
Responsibilities- Manage financial risks
- Develop and communicate company policies and processes
- Approve credit applications
- Directly monitor and proactively assist in collections
- Prepare monthly and year‑end financial statements for $12MM company
- Prepare quarterly financials and submit required borrowing base documentation to the bank
- Oversee human resources, employee benefits, and related items
- Prepare weekly payroll
- Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and year‑end payroll tax returns
- File monthly and quarterly sales tax returns for 2‑3 states
- Act as liaison with banker, insurance broker, and corporate attorney
- Oversee direct reporting of accounting and office staff of 3‑5 people
- Work directly with branch managers on sales, Accounts Receivable (AR), and inventory reports
- Oversee general office management and office contracts
- Work with shareholders on personal financial situations
- Other tasks as assigned or required based on business needs
- CPA (Active license holder strongly preferred. Company supports annual CPE.)
- Sage 100 and Crystal report writing familiarity is a strong plus
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Adaptability to adapt to changing policies
Solid base compensation with a substantial annual bonus eligibility commensurate with the construction industry norm. This is an opportunity to be the key financial, tax, and accounting executive at an established business that will rely on your expertise and acumen. This role is for a self‑starter and a leader who does not require direct supervision, but provides such oversight to the organization in this key role.
