Purpose:

The Tax Investment Sr Manager will manage investments at Athene from a tax perspective to provide daily support to the organizations’ income tax accounting and compliance functions. The Sr Manager will perform investment accounting tasks including reconciliations, asset class tracking within PAM for Investments which includes analysis of new deals, research of various tax issues including new laws and intercompany transfers.

This position will manage all basis including GAAP, BSTAT, and STAT. The role will manage the partnership process for 250+ partnerships. This individual will take responsibility for tax technology surrounding investments including maintenance of master templates and implementation of new initiatives.

Accountabilities:

  • Able to think high level in order to properly account for information across different platforms, entities, and accounting methods
  • Responsible for onboarding new deals from a process perspective by collaborating with the tax counsel and investment managers. Ensure all new deals are setup properly in PAM or other Athene process. (i.e. treated as a partnership for tax, PFICs, etc.)
  • Analyze prospectuses or other applicable documentation monthly to ensure proper tax treatment
  • Understands and advises on various tax investment concepts including OID, derivatives, callable securities, REMICs, fx analysis, etc.
  • Clear understanding of various intercompany transactions including IRC sections 1502, 267, 311, and 351. Ensure proper treatment of securities for each transaction
  • Has strong tax technical and tax research skills
  • Review quarterly and annual tax adjustments related to fixed income equities and alternatives. Perform and document analytic analysis of quarterly results
  • Review deferred tax asset work papers and roll forwards. Maintain inventories for all asset classes and ensure proper inclusion in the provision work papers
  • Work with IT and investment accounting to build and maintain the tax accounting software platforms in both excel and/or other software
  • Develop and implement procedures with an emphasis on efficiency and controls
  • Analyze procedural needs and implement solutions accordingly
  • Responsible for annual controls review. Ensure that investment tax procedures align with overall tax procedures and ensure compliance with investment tax controls, specifically PAM related controls
  • Lead, manage, and/or assist with special projects as needed
  • Collaborate with other teams both within and outside of Finance to achieve mutual objectives and support problem solving. Will need to work with tax counsel, IT, investment managers, and other affiliated entities.
  • Able to self-manage
  • Assist in training team members on tax investment accounting concepts and work papers

Qualifications and

Experience:

  • 6+ years of relevant tax accounting experience required
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred
  • Experience with investments including fixed income equities and alternatives required
  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • Proficient in use of MS office (including Excel and Word)
  • Proficient in understanding technology concepts
  • Process improvement and automation skills
  • Experience with PAM and Bloomberg preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or similar field required

Annual Salary for this role is market competitive. Actual salary for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer. Depending on the role, a discretionary bonus plan or variable sales incentive may be included.
