Job Description
The engineering technician – electric provides cost estimating, design, work instructions, and coordination of extensions or modifications of electric distribution facilities. The role applies established engineering standards and practices for routine projects, including determining pipe, cable, and equipment sizes based on customer and system loads; evaluating design alternatives and associated costs; managing project timing and coordination; procuring materials; conducting field inspections;
and performing all other assigned duties.
- Provide engineering services for cost estimating, design, work instructions, and coordination of construction and maintenance projects on Mid American Energy Company's electric delivery system (20%).
- Prepare routine construction work requests, including work instruction preparation, construction site drawings, material lists, and engineering calculations (20%).
- Perform routine field work such as locating and sizing services, load determination, utility easement acquisition, staking, and minor survey work (15%).
- Engage with customer requests and respond to service needs; collaborate with residential and commercial construction developers (15%).
- Provide routine project management for all phases of a project: scheduling, design, estimates, drawings, cost tracking, and project cost projections (10%).
- Verify and document construction site readiness, ensuring MEC requirements are met for backfill, grading, and conduit installation (5%).
- Provide customers with scheduling notifications and change alerts via email, text, or phone (5%).
- Support work requests, resolve issues, and ensure crews understand work scope, detail, and structure (5%).
- Ensure customer inquiries and engineering detail adhere to SOPs involving tariff application, extension rules, service rules, code requirements, service entrance, and metering (0‑5%).
- Lead emergency response activities, outage response supervisory duties, outage dispatch, downed wire investigation, and field damage assessment (0‑5%).
- Travel and overnight stays may be required as workload dictates (0‑5%).
- Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned (0‑5%).
- Demonstrate knowledge of human performance improvement techniques and implement processes to prevent, detect, and correct human errors (continuous).
- Associate’s degree in a technical field such as civil, electrical, mechanical, construction, CAD, electrical trade, project management, or equivalent work experience. If an associate’s degree is not held, a bachelor’s degree will be considered.
- 2 years of related experience in construction management, civil engineering, CAD, or electrical infrastructure construction/design required for Engineering Technician level.
- 3+ years of related experience required for Engineering Technician II level.
- 5+ years of related experience required for Senior Engineering Technician level.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
