Position PurposeThe Chief Medical Officer will have responsibility for Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines (696 beds) and West Des Moines (73 beds). The CMO provides service to the medical staff and hospital leadership for the local ministry to assist them in fulfilling their mission, plans and objectives, ensuring the provision of quality and cost‑effective care. This position impacts the quality, access, regulatory issues and financial outcomes of clinical and operational departments within the local ministry.
The CMO will network, build consensus, collaborate, and problem solve, playing a key role in implementing strategic and operating plans, service line development, and physician relationship strategies.

Independent judgment and actions that impact patient care outcomes or operations of large departments. Determines appropriate course of action based on professional practice standards, policy or regulatory requirements. Decisions are clinical, qualitative and financial.
Position Accountabilities- Provide an effective bridge between RHM management staff and facility medical staff to create superior relationships with physicians and secure physician input into major decisions.
- Partner with market COO, be responsible to the regional CCO for centralized medical staff functions such as quality, safety and utilization review, and to the RHM President and Executive Team for medical directorships and operational activities related to the medical staff.
- Chair committees as appropriate, work closely with the facility President and Medical Staff President, and serve as a resource in difficult medical staff decisions.
- Assist in the development and implementation of the physician Continuous Quality Improvement process throughout the local ministry, ensuring effective quality improvement systems.
- Set universal standards for patient care delivery and lead goal and improvement plan setting for quality standards across service lines.
- Promote programs and services to referring physicians, educate physicians and office personnel on local ministry functions, and provide problem‑solving resources for service issues.
- Work with the COO of the medical staff to provide leadership development, set goals and objectives for key medical staff, and support strategic operations understanding.
- Bridge clinical and strategic operations by collaborating with the Regional Chief Clinical Officer to develop Trinity Health standards and policies.
- Supervise and manage the medical affairs division to ensure achievement of objectives cost‑effectively and continuous improvement of physician relationships.
- Participate in Senior Leadership Council meetings and all Managed Care strategies and negotiations.
- Provide leadership and problem‑solving resources for local ministry management teams, maintaining professional growth and staying current with healthcare trends.
