Under general supervision, performs a variety of support duties for the Polk County Jail. Oversees the activities of inmate workers performing general housekeeping and sanitation duties of facilities; receives, inspects, inventories, records, stores, and transfers inmate property; performs commissary activities including ordering, inventory, receipt, distribution, and storage; ensures an adequate supply inventory, maintains records, and prepares activity reports; performs other duties as assigned in support of the operations of the jail facilities.
- Knowledge of basic supply inventory and accounting practices and principles.
- Knowledge of office and departmental policies and procedures.
- Basic understanding of the laws, rules, regulations, and standards pertaining to the operation of the Polk County Jail.
- Ability to satisfactorily complete the 40 hour basic jail training course as administered by the Polk County Jail.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to efficiently utilize general office equipment.
- Ability to maintain a computerized inventory tracking system.
- Ability to keep accurate inventory and accounting records and prepare reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to plan and organize daily activities.
- Ability to direct the activities of inmate workers.
- Ability to remain physically active up to eight hours and bend/stoop, kneel, squat, reach, and crawl.
- Ability to lift, carry, pull, and push supplies, property, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Skill in operating a van to safely drive into and back-out of buildings with narrow entryways.
- Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other County employees, law enforcement/corrections personnel, and inmates utilizing courtesy, patience, and tact.
- Graduation from high school or the equivalent, and
- Six-twelve months related training or experience, or
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Candidate must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and physical capacity testing to ensure candidate meets the essential physical requirements of the position.
- A criminal background check is required.
- A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment.
- A valid State of Iowa driver’s license is required.
- Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Ability to work overtime with minimal advance notice.
