Overview
The Iowa Auditor of State (AOS) Office is seeking individuals to join our team as full-time Investigative Auditor. The Performance Investigation Division is responsible for investigating suspected embezzlements. The position is non-merit and candidates must follow the instructions in the To Apply section. The office is exempt from the state merit system rules related to screening and referral requirements, and the office conducts background checks on all finalist candidates prior to any offer of employment.
Responsibilities- Conduct planning, research, and interviews.
- Develop audit objectives and work plans.
- Collect and analyze information; develop audit findings and recommendations based on analysis.
- Draft reports and review work papers for accuracy.
- Carry out audits individually or in teams, depending on project scope and schedule.
- Minimum educational requirements include:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance and/or business, and/or
- Graduation from an accredited two- or four-year degree in criminal justice with experience in financial crimes, and/or
- Equivalent or experience equal to two years of full-time work in investigations.
- Will also consider applicants who have graduated from a business college or community college with knowledge of accounting.
- Beyond the basic educational requirement, all auditors are expected to exhibit a positive, professional demeanor, demonstrate good communication skills, and be able to work well with people.
- Desired qualifications/skills include:
- Strong knowledge of accounting policies and procedures.
- Experience with state and federal programs.
- Knowledge and skill to evaluate compliance laws, regulations, administrative rules, and entities policies and procedures.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Flexibility, initiative, and good problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to plan and organize work to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Preference is given to those who have the professional certification of Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
- Continuing professional development is required and is achieved through on-the-job training, in-house training programs and outside training courses and seminars.
- The Office supports staff efforts to obtain CPA or CFE certifications by providing a tuition reimbursement program for related courses or certificate review classes.
- Some overnight travel may be required; travel time varies by assignment, with reimbursement for transportation, meals, and lodging according to state guidelines.
- The Auditor’s Office is exempt from the state’s merit system; therefore, candidates are not required to complete the merit-system certification process. The office may conduct background checks on finalists prior to offers.
- Salary commensurate with experience.
- Travel, including overnight travel, may be required. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
