JOB TITLE
Vehicle Technician / Mechanic
Reports to:
Foreperson. Responsible for:
Up to 5 staff (semi‑skilled staff, apprentices or other staff delegated to work with a nominated mechanic).
To service, maintain and repair all types of motor vehicles, mechanical handling equipment and mobile plant/equipment in a safe, efficient and economical manner. Work independently to the highest standards, achieving acceptable levels of work and maintaining quality standards at all times.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Examine, inspect and report on the condition, roadworthiness and safety of any vehicle or equipment, including functional testing and the application of diagnostic techniques.
- Service, maintain, adjust or repair vehicle equipment or components using the necessary tools, equipment and facilities within the standard hour’s targets.
- Interpret and implement technical service data and statutory maintenance standards.
- Attend broken‑down or immobilised vehicles and equipment, minimising risk of additional damage.
- Manufacture simple component parts, fabricate body repairs, body panels and perform welding as required.
- Apply policies of the Education Authority’s Vehicle Maintenance Service to optimise equipment availability and reduce costs.
- Identify causes of malfunctions and recommend improvements or modifications to enhance safety or reliability.
- Supervise and instruct semi‑skilled staff, apprentices and other staff.
- Attend training courses on vehicles or equipment as necessary.
- Use safe working practices and procedures, including wearing protective clothing and maintaining tidy personal appearance.
- Co‑operate in the introduction of management information systems.
- Carry out all duties in the working conditions normally inherent in the job and comply with the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978 and other legal requirements.
- Achieve vehicle availability targets and bus driving duties as required.
- Undertake any other duties or responsibilities commensurate with the mechanic’s experience and ability that may reasonably be required by the Foreperson.
- Co‑operate with the Scheme for Maximum Flexibility among Motor Trade Employees in Transport Depots.
- Complete work within specified standard working hour targets.
- Complete work consistently to a high standard.
- Display initiative in diagnosing technical problems and overcoming them effectively.
- Attend broken‑down vehicles and equipment without danger to the public and without causing additional damage.
- Be well‑versed in vehicle legislation and the Education Authority vehicle maintenance policies and procedures.
- Communicate skills and knowledge effectively to staff under training.
- Compliance with the workshop foreperson’s working week arrangement.
- Accurate time‑keeping in accordance with foreperson’s procedures.
- Completion of documents and records as decided by the workshop foreperson, including a job costing system.
- Hold a minimum of NVQ Level 3 Motor Vehicle or an equivalent qualification.
- Hold a full current category B (or equivalent) driving licence.
- Evidence of a minimum of three years’ working experience of carrying out maintenance on a range of vehicles, plant and machinery.
- Experience working with vehicle electrics and using diagnostic computer equipment.
- Ability to maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records.
- Willingness to undertake job‑related training and necessary certifications.
- Willingness to obtain a full category D driving licence and other categories if required.
- Excellent knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic components of vehicles.
- Knowledge of vehicle diagnostic systems and methods.
- Ability to safely handle heavy equipment and use a range of manual and power tools for maintenance and repairs.
- Excellent interpersonal and team‑working skills.
- Effective organisational and planning skills to achieve deadlines.
- Ability to communicate and take instruction in English.
- Hold a vehicle diagnostic qualification.
