Job Overview

The Assistant Maintenance Person supports the safe and efficient operation of the care home by helping maintain the premises, equipment, and grounds in good repair and working order. This role ensures a comfortable, clean, and safe environment for residents, staff, and visitors, adhering to all relevant safety and compliance standards.

Duties & Responsibilities Key Tasks
  • Assist with day-to-day maintenance tasks, including minor plumbing, joinery, and decorating jobs.
  • Carry out regular checks and inspections of equipment, fixtures, and fittings as directed.
  • Support in ensuring that all maintenance logs, records, and compliance checks (e.g., fire alarm tests, emergency lighting checks) are completed and up to date.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff or residents.
  • Help maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of external areas, including gardens, driveways, and walkways.
  • Assist with the setup and movement of furniture and equipment as needed.
  • Report any faults, hazards, or potential risks to the Maintenance Manager or Home Manager.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are safely stored and maintained.
  • Work in line with infection control, health and safety, and fire safety procedures at all times.
  • Support external contractors when they are on-site.
  • Maintain confidentiality and treat residents with dignity and respect at all times.

  • Essential:
    • Basic knowledge of general maintenance and repair tasks
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills
    • Physically fit and capable of manual handling tasks
    • Awareness of health and safety requirements in a care setting
    • Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional evenings or weekends if needed
    • Maintain mandatory training

    Desirable:

    • Previous experience in a similar maintenance or facilities role
    • Relevant qualification (e.g., basic plumbing, electrics, or health and safety training)
    • Experience working in a care home or healthcare environment
