We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Automation Engineer to lead the design development and optimisation of automated systems across our operations.
As Automation engineeryou will play a key role in improving efficiency, reliability, safety, and performance of manufacturing or production processes. This position requires strong technical expertise in control systems, PLC programming, robotics, and industrial automation, along with leadership capability to mentor junior engineers and manage complex projects. What we will ask of you:
Take a project from a blank sheet of paper to a final "handover" document, managing budgets and timelines. Acting as the main project engineer, you will be responsible for designing the entire control philosophy. This includes choosing between centralised vs. distributed I/O, selecting communication protocols (Ether Net/IP, PROFINET, OPC UA), and ensuring cybersecurity at the OT (Operational Technology) level. Writing complex, reusable, and modular code, working with platforms like Siemens TIA Portal.
Overseeing the creation of electrical schematics, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and panel layouts. Ensure everything meets standards such as NEC, UL 508A, or CE. Understand how to extract data out of the system and into a database or cloud platform for predictive maintenance and OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) tracking. Integrating multi-axis servo systems and industrial robots (KUKA & ABB, COBOTS), into the wider automation solution.
Taking the project from the "lab" to the "floor." This involves physical testing, PID tuning, and troubleshooting in high-pressure environments. Mentor & Coach, all direct reports to build high performing team ethos Have a customer focus to ensure all projects remain on target & within budget. Lead design meetings to ensure a full understanding of production requirements and schedule while maintaining clear communication with the design team and management to ensure production deadlines are agreed and met.
Compile the bill of materials on receipt of the design ensuring that all components are ordered within the adequate timeframe and within schedule. Generate drawings prior to commencement of production. Be the first point of contact for the client through the production schedule and after dispatch of the product to ensure that any issues or queries are addressed. Assign relevant tasks to junior engineers and apprentices ensuring efficiency.
Monitor the project schedule ensuring that the production schedule is adhered to, and any issues are brought to the attention of your line manager e.g. time constraints or additional cost outside of budget. Ensure projects are completed within the relevant timescales and budget. What we are looking for:
Essential:
Third level qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering. 5+ Years
Experience with in an automation engineering role, preferably within the electrical engineering field. Strong Knowledge in Control Systems, PLC programming and Industrial
Automation. Strong analytical skills with the ability to remedy problems correctly and with speed Industry Standards & Safety Compliance:
Awareness of CE marking, ISO machinery directives and risk assessment methodologies. Understanding of automation safety standards. Performance Level (PL) & Safety Integrity Level (SIL). Ability to compile risk assessments and method statements. Excellent communication skills both written and oral. Proficient in software packages i.e. Microsoft Office, google documents or equivalent. Have a continuous improvement mindset. Mentoring junior staff to develop the next generation of talent.
Travel Regionally, Nationally and Internationally for SAT tests and commissioning.
