Professional Duties of a Teacher

Teacher carries out general and particular duties as determined by the Principal or Board. The key responsibilities are:

  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach pupils, setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in and out of school.
  • Assess, record and report on pupil development, progress and attainment.
  • Promote the general progress and well‑being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to you.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters, further education and future careers, including information about sources of expert advice.
  • Keep records of and report on the personal and social needs of pupils, where appropriate.
  • Communicate and consult with parents of pupils.
  • Co‑operate with persons or bodies outside the school that are approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors.
  • Participate in meetings related to pupils, the curriculum, or school administration.
  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for individual and group pupils.
  • Participate in staff development schemes and perform self‑review of teaching methods and programmes.
  • Assist the Principal and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, programmes, methods of teaching, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintain discipline and safeguard pupils’ health and safety while on school premises and during authorised school activities elsewhere.
  • Participate in meetings concerning the curriculum, organisation or pastoral functions of the school.
  • Prepare pupils for public examinations, assess them for the purposes of such examinations, record and report assessment results, and supervise examinations.
  • Coordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
  • Support administrative and organisational tasks, including supervising support staff, ordering and allocating equipment and materials, and managing school assemblies.
  • Other duties of similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time.
Working Hours and Scheduling
  • Full‑time teachers shall be available for work on 195 days per year, with no more than 190 days involving classroom teaching.
  • Teachers shall also perform duties totalling 1,265 hours per year, excluding time spent preparing and marking lessons and travelling.
  • Teachers must not be required to teach more than 25 hours in any week in a primary or special school, and not more than 23.5 hours in a secondary school.
  • Teachers must receive at least a 30‑minute break between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. (or 2:30 p.m. for nursery schools).
Essential Criteria (Shortlisting)
  • Hold a recognised teaching qualification for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum 2 years of paid, demonstrable teaching experience at Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1, producing positive learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience using a range of effective classroom strategies to support and challenge pupils of all abilities, including those with SEND.
  • Demonstrable experience using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Beregistered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.
Interview

Essential Criteria
  • Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding and child protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet pupils’ learning needs.
  • Knowledge of digital classroom tools, media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods that inform teaching.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Initiative, problem‑solving and flexibility.
  • Collaboration to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Team working and motivation of self and others.
  • Evidence of values orientation and identification with the school ethos.
Desirable Criteria
  • Minimum 3 years of paid, demonstrable teaching experience at Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1.
  • Experience coordinating pupil voice for school development.
  • Relevant Nurture and/or PATHs primary training.
  • Experience coordinating Sustrans and/or ECO Schools.

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’.
